Community Futures – Sustainable Neighbourhoods is seeking a Community Animator in Scarborough to explore possibilities for neighbourhood-based green projects to encourage changes in attitudes and behaviors in both community and personal activities. Our aim is to reach out to those who have not been a part of the climate and energy conversation previously. Results gained from this initiative will inform future outreach efforts with new constituencies.

The Community Animator will coordinate public meetings with key community institutions like service clubs, BIAs, community or residents’ associations, faith communities, youth groups, urban Indigenous groups, and settlement/newcomer organizations. The Community Animator will do outreach for workshops, presentations, side meetings, festival-type activities, and any incentives or supports available through third-party organizations. Together with the Project Management Team, the Community Animator will help to develop successful local leadership and help participants improve the future livability of their communities. Training will be provided in facilitation and volunteer management skills.

Critical to this position is the ability to implement an approach that is committed to listening to local priorities and concerns for the future, facilitating discussion, providing engaging content, and building capacity for change, all as a catalyst for carbon-reducing activities.

Duties Include:

• Working with and reporting to the Project Management Team
• Recruiting and managing local community volunteers
• Inviting volunteers to training sessions on facilitation skills (with St Stephen’s Community House) and volunteer management skills (with Volunteer Toronto)
• Coordinating & facilitating two visioning sessions in the community with the help of the trained volunteers (at the start and end of the project)
• Collecting data from workshops/meetings and preparing reports on a regular basis
• Maintaining accurate records of project activities (minutes, attendance, results, evaluation, feedback, etc.)
• Arranging and coordinating program workshops as chosen by each community group (potential topics: Parks, Gardens & Trees; Food & Food Waste; Health & Transportation; Buildings; Climate Resilience; Policy Management, Zero Waste; Cultural Evenings)

• An inclusive and anti-oppression approach in engaging with diverse communities
• Proven experience in local community outreach and engagement
• Ability to identify potential partners and develop/strengthen existing relationships
• Self-directed with ability to organize, plan, and prioritize
• Demonstrated knowledge of and passion for environmental issues
• Excellent organizational and time management skills
• Must be available to work flexible hours on a part-time basis

Compensation

The remuneration for this position is $200 per week for (7 – 10 hours per week) for 5 months starting January 1st 2019. This position is ideal for part-time workers, students, or under-employed individuals.
