Research Assistant – Contract position
Immigrant and Refugee Housing and Settlement Project

The Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba Inc. (IRCOM) is a non-profit organization that strives to empower newcomer families to integrate into the wider community by offering safe and affordable transitional housing, programs, and services for newcomer families in their first three years of living in Canada.

IRCOM has recently received approval and funding from the National Housing Strategy for a 13 month study. The project’s purpose is to explore the role of housing in federal immigration policies and programs, and to develop a data management framework that will set the stage for future measurement, research and evaluation of IRCOM as a housing model that facilitates newcomer family housing and integration.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Project Planning Team, the Research Assistant will provide support in conducting tasks associated with a community-based and data-driven research project on the housing and settlement outcomes and trajectories of immigrants and refugees living in Winnipeg.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct literature searches and review academic studies, policy papers, and grey literature on housing and settlement of newcomers
  • Compose research syntheses
  • Collect, review, and digitize data
  • Data analysis
  • Regular meetings and work with project partners
  • Regular reports to Planning Team

Qualifications

Minimum

  • Upper-level undergraduate student
  • Strong knowledge of research methods
  • Experience collecting, managing, and analyzing data
  • Proven skills in conducting quantitative research
  • Demonstrated knowledge of housing and settlement policy
  • Understanding and awareness of immigration and refugee issues in Canada
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Effective writing skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office and database management

Preferred

  • Graduate-level student
  • Quantitative data expertise
  • Experience managing research projects with community partners
  • Experience with database management

Contract Details

This is a contract position. The successful applicant will be required to provide their own work space and their own computer hardware and software. Limited office supplies will be provided. Compensation will be provided according to the budget based on agreed upon deliverables and time frames and upon receipt of invoice for services rendered.

Contract Period: March 11, 2019 until March 30, 2020
Contract budget: $18 to $20 per hour, depending on experience, for a maximum of 400 hours
