SUMMER POSITION FOR YOUTH (Aged 15-29)
Reporting to the Food Security Coordinator, the Community Garden Facilitator will oversee our community garden, assist with nutrition programs and with community events.
Contract Period: May-August 2019
Salary: $13-$14/hour
Hours per week: 25
Responsibilities
- Creating and facilitating a planting, maintenance and harvest plan for the 2019 garden season designed to maximize volunteer and community participation
- Ongoing maintenance of WCWRC garden beds, including weeding and watering as needed
- Cutting grass on a bi-weekly basis and regular cleaning and maintenance of community garden space
- Provide support and troubleshoot concerns and/or conflict with community gardeners
- Planning and facilitating workshops for the community on gardening with a focus on engaging families
- Supporting the community kitchen with food prep and/or daily maintenance when required
- Working with team members to create a positive environment
Qualifications
Essential
- Experience planting, harvesting and maintaining gardens
- Knowledge of food security issues in Winnipeg’s inner city
- Strong planning and facilitation skills
- Willingness to obtain criminal Reference Check and Child Abuse Registry Checks
- Experienced in working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and religions
- Must be comfortable working effectively cross-culturally and with participants with low English levels
Preferred:
- Demonstrated understanding of marginalization, diversity and inclusion framework
- Knowledge of common plants, organic gardening, and a willingness to learn
- Experience working within the non-profit sector
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities
- Existing knowledge of the issues of marginalization
- Experience working collaboratively with community organizations
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Self-motivated, able to work with minimal supervision
