PART TIME POSITION
- These are term positions to end of August funding dependant
- Possibility for continuation for funding beyond August 31st
Spence Neighbourhood Association is looking to fill 2 Part Time Summer Outreach Worker positions in our overnight safe space. The outreach worker will work overnight from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am and will be responsible for programming and building relationships with youth at the Magnus Eliason Recreation Centre by engaging at-risk youth with positive activities, performing risk assessments, providing effective crisis response, connecting them to community resources and social services, and providing them mentorship. The program uses a wraparound mentorship based approach to connecting at-risk youth to their culture and community. This position will also provide outreach to those in need in the community by conducting van outreach during the evenings.
Note- staff are required to work overnights
Primary responsibilities include:
- Completing opening and closing duties for the building/WE24
- Work in cooperation with other team members to ensure space is a safe welcoming environment for its participants and participant needs are met
- Work a variety of shifts including evenings, weekend overnights, and days as needed by youth
- Complete daily logs, progress reports, incident reports, CFS referrals, statistics and assessments of youth
- Perform community outreach in the late hours
- Transport youth in the agency vehicle
- Prepare healthy meals for youth accessing the 24 Hour Safe Space
- Attend staff meetings and agency events as required
- Participate in the planning and implementation of special events
- Build relationships with, mentor and support youth from the West End of Winnipeg
- Assess ongoing needs and explore options that ensure the safety of participants
- Assess and navigate systems including Manitoba Justice, Winnipeg police, CFS, EIA and others
- Support and advocate for youth and families in crisis
- Connect youth to supports and resources in the community
- Address basic needs (safe place, food, hygiene supplies and clothing) of youth
- Facilitate and support youth in exploration and identification of their own culture
- Provide volunteer and employment support to youth
- Organize training’s and workshops that support development for youth
Desired qualifications:
- Experience working with at-risk inner-city youth and demonstrate an understanding of the realities of those living in the inner-city
- Work under pressure in a fast past environment
- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of barriers that exist for Indigenous and Newcomer youth and their families
- Experience in mentoring or counselling youth
- Understanding of resources available for youth within the inner-city
- Ability to provide strong referrals and create action plans alongside youth in meeting their goals
- Understanding of culture, cultural identities and resources within Winnipeg, specifically for Newcomer and Indigenous youth
- Ability to navigate crisis and support others through stressful situations
- Be able to be self-motivated and manage a flexible work schedule
- Enjoy working in a team and individually
- Demonstrate excellent organizational and administrative skills
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Familiarity with a Google Environment (Gmail, google drive, google sheets, etc)
- Ability to provide a current criminal record check and child abuse registry check
- Drivers license
Assets:
- Relevant education or experience in one-on-one mentorship, wrap around support, social work, community development, inner city studies, or other applicable fields.
- Relevant training including current First Aid & CPR, ASSIST, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Mental Health First Aid, Trauma-Informed Care, etc.
- Creativity and ambition
- Experience working with youth involved in gangs
- Experience working with youth with addictions or struggling with mental health
- Experience working with LGBT2SQ* and other marginalized groups of youth
- Understanding of the Youth Criminal Justice System
- Understanding of Restorative Justice theory and practices
Hours and remuneration:
The Employee agrees to Work Part-time/casual (24-37.5 hours) as scheduled in our overnight safe space. SNA agrees to pay $17 with hours paid as worked. Required CPP, EI, and tax deductions will be made and employer contributions will be paid. Responsibilities may require flexible hours to be worked (i.e., weekdays, evenings and weekends). However, regular hours will be overnight from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am or 9:00 pm - 2:00 am on a rotation schedule.
