Community Safety Coordinator CONTRACT POSITION
West Broadway Community Organization (WBCO)

WBCO is a not-for-profit organization that coordinates social and economic revitalization efforts in Winnipeg’s West Broadway neighbourhood.

The Community Safety Coordinator works to achieve neighbourhood safety and harm-reduction goals outlined in West Broadway’s Community Five-Year Plan (2016-2021). Reporting to the Executive Director, the Community Safety Coordinator assists in community organizing and education initiatives, and is a liaison to the West Broadway Bear Clan Chapter.

SAFETY-OUTREACH PROGRAM GOALS:

  • Improve safety and reduce harms in West Broadway
  • Improve the personal well-being of all community members
  • Strengthen West Broadway’s social fabric
  • Improve transportation infrastructure and maintenance for pedestrians, cyclists and transit users

CORE ACTIVITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement and track the safety-specific goals of West Broadway’s Five-Year Community Plan
  • Provide regular information sessions and disseminate resources to educate community members on safety-related issues and strategies
  • Support and liaise with the West Broadway Bear Clan Patrol
  • Organize regular meetings with concerned residents, landlords, and businesses
  • Facilitate West Broadway Safety-Audit events on blocks, in buildings, and in local facilities
  • Act as a liaison between local stakeholders and the Winnipeg Police Service, City Bylaw Inspections, Manitoba Justice’s Public Safety Investigations Unit, etc
  • Representing WBCO as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

Education:

  • Strong speaking, and writing skills required in this position

Experience, Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with tracking outcomes and reporting
  • Minimum two years of related work experience in community-based programming, community planning, and communication
  • Experience working in the inner city
  • Training in non-violent crisis intervention/deescalating potentially violent situations an asset
  • Preference given to applicants renting in Winnipeg’s inner city

Skills in the following areas are essential to the position:

  • Project delivery
  • Harm reduction and crime prevention
  • Report writing
  • Public speaking
  • Outreach with diverse populations

Hours and Wage:

  • 20 hours per week
  • Term position to March 31, 2020 with possibility of extension
  • $18 an hour
  • Office hours are daytimes Monday – Friday, some evening and weekend work required
