North End Women's Centre (NEWC) is located on Treaty 1 territory on original lands of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation. Position: Counsellor
The Counsellor provides direct services to the participants of the Recovery and Housing Support Program and the Community Support Program at the North End Women’s Centre.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary degree or certificate in the social services field
• 2 years of experience providing long term, short term, and/or crisis counselling to women who have experienced addiction; trauma; homelessness; sexual exploitation and gender based violence
• Experience in the development, organization, and facilitation of groups and programs for women of diverse backgrounds
• Knowledge of, and experience working with Indigenous people particularly in terms of the historical context, traditions, teachings as well as the unique barriers Indigenous women identified people face
• Knowledge of the impacts of poverty, addictions, sexual exploitation, homeless, mental health, and violence on women
• Knowledge of a variety of different counselling styles and techniques
• Knowledge of addictions recovery and relapse prevention planning
• Knowledge of sexual exploitation and sex trafficking recovery
• Knowledge of the resources available in the community for women
• Experience working in a community based setting in the North End of Winnipeg an asset
• Knowledge of the resources available in the community to people experiencing poverty, homelessness, gender based violence, and addictions
• Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills
• Non-judgemental and accepting attitude
• Able to recognize own biases and assumptions
• Knowledge and demonstrated ability to apply trauma informed care, cultural proficiency, and harm reduction principles. 
• Ability to work independently and as a team member.
• Basic computer and administrative skills
• Ability to deal with crisis situations in an appropriate manner

Duties & Responsibilities

• To provide crisis counselling (immediate) and basic needs support to women identified people in the Recovery and Housing Support Program and the Community Support Program (over the phone/zoom or in person drop-in/crisis counselling)
• To create (with participant) and evaluate workable recovery plans (safety plans) based on assessment of participant need and stage of recovery in consultation with the Clinical Manager
• To empower women identified people to advocate for themselves and to advocate on their behalf
• To provide information, referral, and support to women identified people
• To plan and facilitate open and closed counselling groups and workshops for women identified people
• Administrative and reporting duties

Additional Requirements

• Valid Class 5 license
• Regular access to a safe and reliable vehicle
• Satisfactory Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Check

Job Status: Full Time Term until March 31, 2022
37.5 hours per week (8:30-4:30pm) Monday to Friday
Ability to work some evenings until 8:30 pm

Salary Range: $18 – $24 per hour (dependent on qualifications and experience)
