BUILD INC. SEEKS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Building Urban Industries for Local Development (BUILD) Inc. is seeking an Executive Director to provide leadership, coordinating all aspects of BUILD’s operations and affairs. Reporting to an Indigenous Board of Directors, the Executive Director in responsible for: Board relationships & leadership; strategic planning and monitoring; financial planning; management and fundraising; government, community and media relations; as well as human resources planning and management. Founded in 2006, BUILD is a multiple award-winning social enterprise general contractor and training program for people who face barriers to employment. A non-profit organization, BUILD is a national leader in providing innovative approaches to address some of society’s most complex and complicated social issues. BUILD’s trainees often have criminal records, contact with the child welfare system, little to no work experience, and incomplete education. Trainees are provided with entry-level trades-based training, essential skills, vocational skills and job preparation training. These skills are supplemented through work experience in BUILD’s self-sustaining general contracting social enterprise. Apartment turnover and interior renovation services are provided to campaign-level customers at competitive market rates, on-time and with quality assurance.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree or higher (e.g. Economic Development, Community Development, Social Work) OR a combination of training in business management, social services delivery, Indigenous adult education or public administration.
  • Minimum of 5 years in senior management experience preferred.
  • Experience in the social innovation sector in a leadership or business management role.

DEMONSTRATED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of leadership and management principles as they relate to the non-profit sector.
  • Knowledge and experience with social enterprise or mission-driven business operations with multiple competing bottom-lines.
  • Knowledge of the challenges of multi-barriered individuals seeking employment and best practices for overcoming those challenges.
  • Knowledge of the construction sector and its human resource needs, including unionized and nonunionized private sector operations.
  • Knowledge of the principles of Community Economic Development and their application.
  • Demonstrated skill in human resources management, including best practices for culturally safe workplaces for Indigenous people.
  • Demonstrated skill in financial management of multi-million-dollar organizations.
  • Knowledge of project management tools and practices.
  • Highly proficient with the Microsoft Office 365 platform.

RESPONSILBITIES AND DUTIES

Board Relationships
& Leadership
  • Get appropriate approvals for annual budget, and assorted workplans from the board along with working with the Board and staff to develop, refine, and implement the organization’s vision, mission and core values.
  • Oversee the development of strategic planning with help from the Board
  • Assist the Board and staff in the development and implementation of policy and procedure changes.
  • Assesses program needs, identifies funders and oversees and monitors budgets.
  • Prepare Board meeting agendas in collaboration with Board Chair.
  • Ensure distribution of appropriate meeting notices and minutes, and BUILD events to Board members.
  • Prepare reports for the Board as requested.
  • Monitor to ensure that the system of reporting to the Board is being followed.
  • Coordinate the annual production of an external audit.
  • Coordinate the activities leading up to the Annual General Meeting of the organization.
  • Represent BUILD Inc on Board of Directors of 765 Main Inc. (Social Enterprise Centre) or oversee assigned designate.
Planning & Monitoring
  • Oversee the management of physical assets (765 Main Inc. aka Social Enterprise Centre), including development plans in collaboration with ownership partner(s).
Financial Planning,
Management &
Fundraising
  • Works with colleagues on preparation of a comprehensive budget
  1. Assist the Board in the development and implementation of a funding plan.
  2. Authorizes expenditures, cheque signing authority, oversees tracking/controlling revenues for BUILD and partnership in 765 Main Inc.
  3. Responsible for the preparation of submissions to potential funders.
  4. Develop a network of individual and organizational funders.
External Relations
  • Maintain positive relationships with all sector participants, community /organizational leaders, founding partners, program partners, funders, government agencies, community at large and the media.
  • Develop knowledge of other resources available in the community and cultivate a network of these resources.
  • Represent BUILD in community and economic development forums, the media, national organizations, etc.
Community &
Media Relations
  • Communicate with all stakeholders to keep them informed of BUILD’s work and to identify changes in the community served by BUILD.
  • Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, funders, politicians and other organizations to help achieve the goals of BUILD.
Human Resources
Planning &
Management
  • Determine organizational staffing requirements.
  • Evaluate the adequacy of existing human resource policies and procedures and recommend new ones.
  • Implement human resources policies including development of job descriptions for BUILD staff.
  • Address senior staff performance concerns in a timely and appropriate manner and ensure all staff reviews are completed on a regular basis.
  • Directly supervises four (4) staff and indirectly thirty (30) permanent and contract staff. Titles of those directly supervised: Chief Financial Officer, Training Manager, Social Enterprise Manager, Administrative Assistant


This position is full time permanent (37.5 hour per week) and salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. We offer a competitive compensation and employee benefits package in a team-oriented work environment.
