Through the CreateAction: Inclusive Social Innovation Program, the Northern Manitoba Food Culture, & Community Collaborative is excited to be seeking a Story Sharing and Knowledge Amplification Assistant for a full-time paid 6-month work experience/employment opportunity. The person in this position will be part of a network of 25 CreateAction participants and will join in regular peer learning and training sessions throughout the 6-month work placement. In this role you will work with NMFCCC staff to help communities tell their stories. This position will focus on collecting stories from community projects and speaking with community champions across Manitoba. The successful applicant will amplify northern and Indigenous voices and knowledge.
About the Northern Manitoba Food Culture & Community Collaborative:
In 2014, the Northern Manitoba Food, Culture, and Community Fund (NMFCCC or Collaborative) was established to assist communities to address northern Manitoba’s serious food security and related community economic development challenges. We achieve this mission by providing grants and in-kind supports to communities. The NMFCCC is an active collaboration between funding organization, local northern advisors, and communities in the region. Tides Canada funds the initiative and provides the administrative supports for the Collaborative. The shared goal of the Collaborative is to improve access to healthy foods, develop resilient local economies, and revitalize cultural traditions.
As a Collaborative we believe that positive change at a systems level starts at the local level. And, that solutions are best understood and led by the people who are closest to the challenge. The values of the collaborative include reciprocity; shared learning; a collaborative approach; a relational approach; commitment; and a slow but steady pace.
In 2019, the NMFCCC made grants to 27 community projects in 21 northern Manitoba communities. Projects included boreal horticulture, northern beekeeping, community chicken coops, community greenhouses, and traditional food programs reconnecting people with country foods. Other important aspects of the Collaborative include an annual learning trip, opportunities for community exchanges, and shared learning.
Skills and Qualities:
- Interest and some knowledge in digital story sharing and social media outlets including podcasts.
- Passionate about supporting community-led change
- Strong communication skills and enjoys speaking with people and hearing stories
- A genuine sense of curiosity and respect for community-led work
- Bringing your own experience and knowledge of food security work, northern life, and in some cases Indigenous culture to the process.
- Interested in learning about community development projects in Northern Manitoba.
- Organized and able to multi-task
- Positive attitude and enjoys team work as well as independently
- Comfortable using basic Windows and Microsoft software and applications
- Typing speed is an asset
- Openness and willing to learning, unlearning, and grow with others in their learning journey
- Ability to work in a flexible and fluid, yet directed manor

The position:
The Story Sharing and Knowledge Amplification Assistant will work to strengthen and deepen our relationships with existing and new community partners to promote and coordinate resource sharing and initiatives in northern Manitoba. With this position we would like to help communities create podcasts, videos, print media, social media and more, about their community projects. Story sharing format will be determined by the community. Storytelling and knowledge sharing will focus on the designs of local, solution-oriented projects that address regional issues of food insecurity, cultural revitalization, community economic development, and community empowerment.
With this role we want to be fluid and flexible as is the Collaborative’s approach to supportingcommunity-led work. recognize that everyone has different gifts and skills to share. In this position we hope we can learn from the Story Sharing and Knowledge Amplification Assistant but also expand their skills and knowledge related in this field of work.
To be eligible to participate in the Canadian CED Network CreateAction: Inclusive Social Innovation Program funded position, individuals must:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of placement;
- A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a protected person as defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Experiencing one or more barrier to employment and/or
- Be currently not in education, employment or training (NEET)
