Food Matters Manitoba envisions sustainable food systems, rooted in food justice. Our mission is to collaborate on advancing perceptions, policies and practices towards more equitable responses to food security and food systems issues generally.
Food Matters Manitoba (FMM) is seeking an Executive Director (ED) to provide overall leadership and management to advance strategic and operational direction of the organization. The ED will lead implementation of Board strategic priorities, establish and implement policy matters, provide oversight of the staff team and direct fund development in a manner consistent with the mission,vision, and values of the organization.
Key accountabilities
Reporting to the Board of Directors through the Board Chair, the ED is accountable for the following:
- Overall strategic leadership and day-to-day operational management (financial, physical and human resources) of all aspects of FMM
- Implementing board policies and organizational processes for FMM
- Leading and developing organizational readiness plans and change management strategy
- Developing, planning and overseeing the delivery of programs and services
- Leading the development and implementation of major strategic and fundraising initiatives
- Advancing a positive and productive workplace culture that is consistent with FMM's vision, mission and values, and providing direct oversight of staff
- Initiating, building and sustaining effective partnerships with stakeholders, donors, media, government and other community partners
- Providing leadership and working with stakeholders to define and strategize reconciliation goals of FMM
- Building and maintaining a professional and collaborative relationship with the volunteer Board of Directors, developing sound advice, recommendations and reports to enable the Board to make strategic decisions and discharge its fiduciary duties
- Providing key oversight and financial control of the organization including preparation of annual operating plans to align with the Strategic Priorities
Education requirements
- Related post-secondary education in Business Administration, Not-for-Profit Management, Social Services, or another relevant field
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
Desired experience
- Minimum 5 - 10 years' experience in a senior leadership role in complex multi-stakeholder organizations
- Experience in initiating, planning, implementing and evaluating policies and programs
- Experience in managing, leading and developing staff
- Experience in revenue generation through social enterprise, philanthropy, fundraising, grant and proposal writing
- Accomplished networker and relationship builder, experienced in representing an organization to stakeholders
- Experience reporting to a volunteer board would be an asset
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Working knowledge of budgeting, business development and strategic thinking
- Sound judgment and decision-making skills
- Knowledge of board processes and board reporting in the not-for-profit sector
- Outstanding communication skills - oral, presentation, written; the ability to communicate to both internal and external audiences
- Experience working with First Nations, Indigenous peoples and other equity-seeking groups considered an asset
Performance Expectations
- Provide organizational input to the Board of Directors' strategic planning process and support the development of the organization's strategic plan
- In collaboration with the members of the staff team, and in the context of the organization's strategic plan, develop the annual operating plan, including goals and objectives for the organization, and submit these to the Board of Directors for their approval
- Maintain relationships with funding sources and prepare funding proposals
- Working with the board and appointed staff team, expand program funding opportunities and develop and implement development strategies
- Establish and maintain senior level relationships with relevant stakeholder groups
- Working with the board, stakeholders and staff, develop a path to reconciliation for FMM
- Plan for the development of human resources within the organization and establish and maintain programs that will encourage successful future management of the organization
- Oversee staff work plans including duties, tasks, and accomplishments towards the implementation of the organization's operating plan.
