This paper focuses on urban Aboriginal community development. It draws on the experiences of 26 Aboriginal people who have been and are active in various forms of community development in Winnipeg’s inner city. Topics of discussion include: theory and methodology surrounding development and CED; the construction of Aboriginal people as “other” in Canadian society; the ways in which urban Aboriginal peoples have challenged colonial development to reclaim their history and rebuild their lives; suggestions for models of community development created by and for Aboriginal peoples.
