We are seeking a seasoned professional to join our Community Development team. The City Planner provides advice to Council on long range and current planning issues ranging from social and community topics to development and land use projects. In this role you will also initiate and manage large, complex and diverse planning projects involving a wide variety of interests.

Reporting to the Director, Community Development, you will manage the professional and technical planning work of the Community Planning and Community Development staff including performance management and labour relations issues. The City Planner initiates policy development activities related to long range land use, community and city planning including amendments to the Zoning Bylaw and Official Community Plan. At Council's direction you will be responsible for implementing and maintaining planning and development control policies and interpreting existing policies in senior staff or intergovernmental forums. You will also initiate and conduct negotiations for large projects and assist staff in closing negotiations on smaller developments as well as presenting development proposals to Council, the public and other staff. The City Planner is a spokesperson for planning in the City, prepares background notes for senior officials as required, and liaises with Corporate Communications in responding to media enquiries. In addition, you will advise other department and corporations on planning matters and processes.

This position requires an individual experienced in a broad range of projects in an urban municipality context, a track record of planning accomplishments within tight timelines and with sensitivity to the business and political environment. The successful candidate will have proven leadership abilities as well as superior communication and interpersonal skills and a track record of working effectively in a public-oriented and collaborative working environment. In addition, you have the ability to negotiate effectively, and have sound knowledge of planning legislation and superior planning analysis skills.

You will have a Canadian Institute of Planners recognized degree in Community or Regional Planning or other related area supplemented by professional planning experience. Membership or eligibility for membership in the Planning Institute of British Columbia or the Canadian Institute of Planners is required. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and working knowledge of computerized analysis techniques in the profession is also necessary. A valid Class 5 B. C. Driver's License is required.
