Coordinator / Counselor: Women's Workshop Program

The Women's Workshop pre-employment program introduces inner-city woman to the world of carpentry and registered trades. The program develops essential workplace skills and attempts to get women registered and progressing in a trade of their choice.

The Coordinator/Counselor supervises participant recruitment; is the primary Life Skills Coach and essential skills resource, coordinates related workshops, counsels participants as they address personal barriers to employment and pursue job searches, coordinates relationships with partner agencies, maintains program files and records, and prepares reports as directed.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

  • Good interviewing and assessment skills
  • Ability to develop a trusting rapport with individuals presenting multiple barriers to employment
  • Excellent presentation and group facilitation skills
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written, including conflict de-escalation & resolution skills
  • Good knowledge of job search tactics and career planning
  • Ability to develop community networks and foster collaboration
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Ability to competently use standard microcomputer software
  • Ability to organize and maintain project administrative files
  • Knowledge of labour markets for the trades (desirable)
  • Good knowledge of the First Nations & immigrant communities in the DTES, and MHSD Programs (desirable)
  • Work experience in a registered trade (desirable)
  •  Experience working with those with addictions and mental health concerns (desirable)

Education and Knowledge: Diploma in a related human / social service field.

Training and Experience: 3 years recent related experience, preferably including one (1) year employment counseling and 1 year life skills training.

Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

This position is open to male and female applicants. This position requires union membership. 40 hour work-week 8:00am - 4:00pm. Wage rate is $19.99 to $24.00 per hour, based on qualifications.
