WEST BROADWAY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (WBDC)

One year term position - pending funding approval

WBDC is a not-for-profit organization that supports the renewal in our inner-city community.
WBDC works with residents and stakeholders toward environmentally sustainable, social
and economic revitalization of the West Broadway neighbourhood.

This position will:

  • Work to improve access to, and quality of, green spaces in the West Broadway neighbourhood and support environmentally sustainable practices (ie. composting)
  • Build resident capacity for green space management and development
  • Ensure quality communications with residents and stakeholders on greening activities
Responsibilities

1. Support the development of green spaces in West Broadway
  • Create a detailed work plan based on the final Green Space Plan to move forward on developing phase one of the Plan
  • Convene and facilitate all project partners to communicate and meet regularly
  • Develop proposals and identify funding opportunities
  • Communicate back the community as these projects move forward
2. Green space communications plan
  • Develop and implement a communications plan to inform West Broadway residents of existing green spaces, community compost sites and how they can get involved
  • Facilitate communication amongst existing greening stakeholders
3. Compost Strategy
  • Develop a compost strategy with the local volunteer Compost Committee
  • Support the Compost Committee and the summer youth Composting
  • Coordinator to maintain existing sites and build two new sites
4. Support Community Gardens
  • Support three community gardens by providing resources and information to gardeners
  • Support three community garden committees and build committee capacity
  • Support gardeners towards garden upkeep and maintenance
5. Human Resources
  • Supervise summer students (Urban Green Team, Canada Summer Jobs)
  • Work with the Volunteer Coordinator to support the Volunteer management of greening volunteers
6. Community development / WBDC
  • Work in a coordinated manner with other WBDC staff
  • Support WBDC staff team by attending staff meetings, occasionally helping out at WBDC events (i.e. Spring Clean Up, AGM)
  • Representing WBDC at appropriate events
Qualifications
  • Relevant undergraduate and/or post secondary education and experience in environmental / urban planning, community development, horticulture, composting
  • Experience with event planning and committee organizing
  • Experience supervising youth, experience in volunteer management
  • Knowledge and experience in Community Development and Community Economic Development
  • Experience and knowledge of conflict mediation
  • Knowledge, skills and experience in organic horticulture and composting
  • Strong analytical, written and oral communication skills
  • Pro-active leader, positive attitude, enjoys taking initiative, works well
  • independently and in a team
  • Proven experience delivering results on time and on budget
  • Outreach with diverse populations
  • Working with historically marginalized populations
  • Microsoft Office, proficient keyboardist, email and internet
Hours of Work:
Regular office hours Monday - Friday, some evening and weekend hours required

Salary and Benefits:
$32,000 - $35,000 / year commiserate with experience. Group benefits plan available.

Hours of Work:
35 hrs/week; some evening and weekend hours required. This is a one year term
position. Continuation of the position depends on funding availability.

Start Date:
***We are currently awaiting funding approval for this project. We hope to have
funding in place by the end of April/ early May, the start date will be in May, 2009.
