WBDC is a not-for-profit organization that supports the renewal in our inner-city community.
WBDC works with residents and stakeholders toward environmentally sustainable, social
and economic revitalization of the West Broadway neighbourhood.
This position will work in two areas:
Safety: facilitate conditions under which residents and business owners could live without
fear of exposure to crime, harassment or harm to themselves and others
Rental/ Rooming Houses: improve living conditions and quality of life conditions for rental
tenants, especially those living in rooming houses by facilitating housing improvements and
awareness of resources for tenants, housing providers and caretakers
Responsibilities:
1. Safety
$30,000 / year; group benefit plan available.
Hours of Work:
35 hrs/week; some evening and weekend hours required. This is a one year term position.
Continuation of the position depends on funding availability.

This position will work in two areas:

Responsibilities:
1. Safety
- Facilitate, organize and draft a Safety Plan in West Broadway, using participatory processes, together with residents, business owners and stakeholders
- Create West Broadway Citizens on Patrol Program (COPP)
- Improve access to crime prevention information for residents, business owners
- Improve understanding of the root causes of crime in the neighbourhood
- Support the West Broadway Safety Coalition by staffing this resident group and providing resources and support for their activities.
- Educating rooming house tenants on their rights and responsibilities and holding public events on priority issues
- Improving communications between tenants and landlords
- Improving safety of rooming houses by piloting home safety audits with tenants and making small improvements to the units, with the housing provider's permission.
- Support WBDC staff team by attending staff meetings, occasionally helping out at WBDC events (ie Spring Clean Up, AGM)
- Representing WBDC at appropriate events
- Bachelor of Arts and/or Master of Urban Planning or Community Development
- Worker Diploma and/or equivalent education and experience
- Two - three years of related work experience in community-based programming, community planning, and communication
- Project and Volunteer Management
- Public consultation methods
- Experience with event planning and committee organizing
- Knowledge and experience in Community Development and Community Economic Development
- Understanding and knowledge of the root causes of crime and community development approaches to crime prevention and promotion of safety
- Experience and knowledge of conflict mediation
- Strong analytical, written and oral communication skills; record keeping skills
- Pro-active leader, positive attitude, enjoys taking initiative, works well independently and in a team
- Proven experience delivering results on time and on budget
- Outreach with diverse populations
- Working with historically marginalized populations
- Basic carpentry skills
- Microsoft Office, proficient keyboardist, email and internet
