West Broadway Development - Good Food Club Intern

WBDC is a not-for-profit organization that coordinates neighbourhood renewal in our inner-city community. WBDC works with residents and stakeholders toward environmentally sustainable, social and economic revitalization of the West Broadway neighbourhood.

The Good Food Club (GFC) aims to empower residents with knowledge and access to healthy food for an active and healthy life, especially those vulnerable to food insecurity. Activities include: food boxes, community dinners, farm trips and a vegetable market. Residents are invited to become members, and can earn "sweat equity points" ie working in exchange for food.

The GFC program requires the services of an Intern in the summer months. The goals of this position are to:

 

  • Assist the Good Food Club Coordinator with farm trips, the Veggie Van Market, and special events
  • Renew GFC Memberships and assist with membership development
  • Assist the GFC Fundraiser to update the membership database
  • Assist with the GFC Social Enterprise

Responsibilities:

 

  • Assist the Coordinator in the following activities:
    • Organizing weekly trips to a local farm, including supporting GFC members to participate in farm activities
    • Organizing a weekly vegetable market in the neighbourhood, including advertising, logistics and training volunteers
    • The annual renewal of GFC memberships, responding to the needs of the membership and doing outreach to increase memberships
    • Updating the membership database in GiftWorks
    • Driving the van when necessary
  • The GFC Intern will also work with the Composting Coordinator to develop a business plan on a social enterprise compost bin building business

Qualifications:

 

  • Knowledge and/ or experience in food security, organizing events or projects, business planning, Community Development (CD)
  • Experience working with diverse groups of people, including people with low incomes and people with multiple barriers to the job market
  • Experience with community outreach and conflict mediation
  • Ability to be self-directed and work collaboratively with others
  • Enrolled in post-secondary education in relevant field such as CD, food sciences, urban planning, sociology, politics, business administration
  • Pro-active leader, positive attitude, enjoys taking initiative, works well independently and in a team
  • Valid Driver's license required, CPR/First Aid preferred
  • Willing to consent to a criminal record check and child abuse registry check

Salary and hours of work:

$10/hour; 35 hrs/week Regular hours: Monday - Wednesday 9- 5; Thursdays 11 - 7; Fridays 8 - 4. Occasional evening and weekend hours required.

Terms of work:

This is an internship funded by Canada Summer Jobs, Service Canada. The funding stipulates that the employee be between 15 and 30 years of age at the time of hire; and have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year.

Preference will be given to youth living in the West Broadway neighbourhood.
