WBDC is a not-for-profit organization working to coordinate neighbourhood renewal in our inner-city community. WBDC works with residents and stakeholders toward environmentally sustainable, social and economic revitalization of the West Broadway neighbourhood.
The West Broadway Development Corporation supports the volunteer Compost Team to manage 20 compost bins located at six sites in the neighbourhood. This position will be supervised by the Greenspace Development Coordinator.
The goals of this position are to:
- Support the Compost Team to maintain existing sites and develop new compost demonstration sites;
- Improve knowledge and practice of composting,
- Improve communications on composting
- Develop a business plan for a compost bin building social enterprise
Responsibilities:
- Work with the Compost Team to do regular maintenance of the community compost bins
- Develop at least two new compost demonstration sites
- Create a map of compost sites in West Broadway
- Assist in organizing two workshops on composting
- Work with the Good Food Club Intern to develop a business plan for a compost bin building social enterprise
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of composting, willingness to be trained in composting
- Experience with community programs/ organizing events
- Experience with diverse groups of people in the inner-city
- Problem-solving skills
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Can work individually as well as a team
- Pro-active leader, positive attitude, enjoys taking initiative, works well independently and in a team
- Enrolled in post-secondary education
- CPR/First Aid preferred
- Willing to consent to a criminal record check
Salary and hours of work:
$10/hour; 35 hrs/week for eight weeks. Regular hours: Monday - Friday 9 - 5. Occasional evening and weekend hours required.
Terms of work:
This is an internship funded by Canada Summer Jobs, Service Canada. The funding stipulates that the employee be between 15 and 30 years of age at the time of hire; and have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year.
Preference will be given to youth living in the West Broadway neighbourhood.
