Spence Neighbourhood Association enjoys a history of working with community residents to improve neighbourhood safety with a community organising ethic emphasising education, community connecting, and capacity building.

This project will work towards outcomes of increased participation and collaboration, improved resident capacity to understand and work collaboratively on safety issues, and increased responsiveness to safety issues in West Central Winnipeg (West Broadway, Daniel McIntyre, St Matthews, and Spence Neighbourhoods).

Main activities will include:

  • Model development for implementation and distribution:
    • Block Captain Coordination and Support
    • Neighbourhood Safety Committee development and support
    • Neighbourhood Safety Audit development, support and follow up
  • West Central Safety Coalition Development and Support
  • Public education and communication
  • Some fundraising and reporting requirements

Preference will be given to candidates that demonstrate:

  • Ability to work in teams, working with diverse populations especially youth, Aboriginal peoples, and newcomers. Conflict resolution skills an asset.
  • Excellent ability to collaborate and work with a group.
  • Experience developing and implementing program plans.
  • Experience giving workshops, teaching, facilitating group learning.
  • Strong ability to facilitate decision making in groups.
  • Community organising experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and computer skills.
  • Familiarity of Spence Neighbourhood.
  • Demonstrated project management experience or related.

Candidates can expect to undergo criminal record and child abuse registry checks prior to being hired. The results of criminal record checks may or may not affect the candidate's success.

Salary and Hours of Work:

$16-18, up to 35 hours a week starting in June, 2009 pending funding approval.
