The Community Greenhouse Project is in its pilot phase in our community. This summer the former partially abandoned site at 689 Maryland is being developed as a community greenspace with a greenhouse and community gathering space.

Tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Assist SNA Community Greenhouse Coordinator with establishing organic community greenhouse and community garden beds at site for use by volunteer community members and groups.
  • Assist in organizing and promoting group workshops on site.
  • Act as youth liaison to other youth/ groups coming into site.
  • Work with and support youth and adult volunteers.
  • Promote project and learning opportunities, as well as updates on site development throughout the community.
  • Organise community events at the site to promote community involvement, and promote feelings of welcoming, inclusivity and safety at the site.
  • Host events like the Inner City Community Garden Tour at the Greenhouse site.

Preference will be given to candidates that:

  • Show ability to work in teams, working with diverse populations especially youth, First Nations and newcomers
  • Excellent communication and computer skills
  • Bi-lingual or Language skills
  • Supervisory and training experience
  • Horticulture/organic farming/gardening training and/or experience
  • Live in, or can demonstrate significant familiarity of Spence Neighbourhood
  • Have a depth of understanding of inner city and food security issues
  • Demonstrated project management experience or related.

This is a Service Canada Funded position for workers age 15-30 who have been registered full time as students in 08/09 and intend to register full time for 09/10. Candidates can expect to undergo criminal record and child abuse registry checks prior to being hired. The results of criminal record checks may or may not affect the candidate's success.

Salary and Hours of Work:

Youth Greenhouse Assistant $8.75-$10.00 per hour dependant on funding.  Up to 30 hours a week starting immediately to August 31st, 2009.

The Youth Greenhouse Assistant will report to the Greenhouse Coordinator.
