1. 2010-2011 Board Executive Formed

2. National Summit on a People-Centred Economy: Resources On-Line

The National Summit on a People-Centred Economy presented a tremendous lineup of speakers and presentations by representatives from community economic development, cooperative and social economy sectors to build a common agenda and mobilize action for a secure, sustainable economy. Summit documents and videos of speakers, including best-selling author Raj Patel, Ken Delaney from the Steelworkers and Michael Peck from Mondragon, as well as Michael Ignatieff, Jean-Pierre Blackburn and others are now available on-line at http://www.ccednet-rcdec.ca/en/summit   Summit organizers will be meeting again in September to discuss next steps and we will keep you informed.  

3. Membership Summer Special

Building on the success of the National Summit on a People-Centred Economy, there’s never been a better time to join the Canadian CED Network. We are offering a special 50% prorated rate to new members signing up for the remainder of 2010. In addition to being part of a national platform for collective action, becoming a CCEDNet member offers opportunities for practitioner development, peer learning, as well as tools and resources and discounted rates and travel subsidies for future conferences and events. 4. CCEDNet Membership Committee Seeks New Members

CCEDNet's Membership Committee is made up of CED practitioners from across the country who work to connect people. They recruit new members and provide advice on marketing, member benefits and services to support members’ capacity to advance CED in Canada. If you are interested in joining the Membership Committee, please send an email to Committee Chair Ryan Gibson (ryan_gibson@live.com) outlining your interest in the work of CCEDNet's Membership Committee and a brief bio highlighting your experiences and affiliations. The Membership Committee meets via conference call once a month. In selecting members, the committee looks to ensure diverse representation from geographic, demographic, and sectoral contexts.  

5. CCEDNet International Blog

The Canadian CED Network International Committee welcomes you to their Blog. It was created toshare information with members, the Canadian public and interested persons around the world.  They welcome information and postings, either in English or in French. 6. Network Offers Translation Services

The Canadian CED Network offers specialized translation services in the field of community economic development and the social economy. We are happy to provide both English to French and French to English translations for documents of all sizes. Through strong relationships with skilful, certified translators, we are able to provide competitive rates and quick turnaround time. 7. New Report: If Women Mattered

The Women’s Economic Council’s new report If Women Mattered outlines the steps the federal government can take to effectively support women-centred CED organizations including gender-equitable federal spending and funding women-centred CED as an effective, targeted poverty reduction strategy. Download If Women Mattered <http://www.womenseconomiccouncil.ca/eng/resources/If_Women_Mattered.pdf> or access the report at http://www.womenseconomiccouncil.ca  

8. Campaign Updates: Dignity for All & Make Poverty History

The Canadian CED Network supports the Dignity for All campaign for a poverty free Canada. The campaign calls for vigorous and sustained action by the federal government to combat the structural causes of poverty in Canada. Supporters are urged to raise the issue of poverty eradication with their MP this summer and can use the lobby kit developed by Campaign 2000 to assist in their efforts.   The United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Review Summit will take place this year in New York from September 20-22. Check out the Canadian MDG Report to find out how Canada is doing at meeting its commitments to the MDGs. Leading up to the MDG Summit, on September17-19, millions of people around the world will participate in events where they will ‘Stand Up’ and tell their governments to keep its promises to end poverty at home and abroad. 9. Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation Annual Conference

The Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation annual policy conference On the Bright Side: Rural Canada Works will be held October 14-16, 2010, hosted by the Rural Development Institute in Brandon, Manitoba. Sessions focusing on rural policy, immigration, education, food security, and other issues will address challenges affecting today’s rural communities, and highlight approaches designed to address these challenges. Early bird registration is available until August 20, 2010. Further details on the conference can be found at http://www2.brandonu.ca/organizations/rdi//crrf2010english.asp 

10. MA Program in Community Development

BALTA has been working with the University of Victoria to develop a new MA program in Community Development with three streams in community economic development, co-operatives and non-profits. The program is now recruiting students. Designed with working professionals in mind, the Master of Arts in Community Development (MACD) will build and develop capacity to become a successful leader in the civil society and social economy.   The MACD is a part-time professional program delivered through a combination of online and residential courses based at the University of Victoria. 11. CCA International Youth Internship Program

12. Knowledge Commons National Summit

13. Strategic Dialogue about Place-Based Poverty Reduction Efforts in Canada

In May 2010, The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation and Tamarack – An Institute for Community Engagement hosted a strategic dialogue about place-based poverty reduction efforts in Canada.  Forty-six business, government, philanthropic, academic and community sector leaders reviewed the strengths and challenges of working collaboratively to tackle poverty in Canada and the United States.  This web page provides an overview of the Strategic Dialogue, presentations and resources developed for the two-day session, and ideas and future directions for continued work on poverty reduction.   http://tamarackcommunity.ca/Strategic_Dialogue.html  

14. Local Government Support for the Social Economy: CSEHUB Thematic Newsletter

Research on the Social Economy in Canada by the Canadian Social Economy Hub (CSEHUB) shows an important emerging trend by local governments and community organizations using community economic development and the social economy as purposeful strategies in improving local socioeconomic and environmental conditions. 15. Practitioner of the Month – Magdalena Santa Maria Chimbor

Magdalena Santa María Chimbor is a civil society leader, a CED activist, and a prominent member of the women’s movement in Chiclayo, Peru. 16. Putting Co-operatives on the Map: Community Information Database and C-operatives

The Community Information Database (CID) is a free internet-based tool that provides communities, researchers, and governments with access to consistent and reliable socio-economic and demographic data for all communities and regions across Canada. The tool provides more than 900 social, demographic, and economic indicators, including population, income, employment, health, housing and many others. The data are presented in the form of interactive maps, tables, and charts. The CID is available at www.cid-bdc.ca
