The Food Connections Project is focused on rebuilding the necessary skills we need to fully enjoy the food that is grown here. This project aims to increase our abilities to cook seasonally; to can, freeze, and store food for the winter; to take advantage of win-win relationships between farmers and consumers; to celebrate and enjoy our harvest. We are hiring an intern who will work closely with the Food Connections Project Coordinator to develop and deliver these Food Action Committee programs.
The Food Connector’s duties include:
- Assisting the Food Connections Coordinator in organizing cooking, preserving and root cellar workshops (e.g. advertising, running registration, procuring workshop materials, follow up surveys);
- Helping to develop a facilitation guide for the above workshops;
- Researching a variety of topics, including cold storage and other low energy food preservation methods;
- Developing resource materials on setting up buying groups and organizing buying group discussions with partner community groups, workplaces, and/or organizations of food educators in order to encourage the formation of such groups;
- Assisting with ongoing project evaluation;
- Supporting the work of the Food Action Committee and the Ecology Action Centre.
Interested Candidates should possess the following skills and experience:
- Strong knowledge of and skills in food preparation and preservation
- Good communication skills, able to seek out assistance and feedback.
- Enjoy working with people, able to facilitate large groups and conflict resolution.
- Strong organizational skills, able to create project timelines, budgets and reports.
- Experience working with diverse communities.
- Demonstrated leadership skills
- Drivers license is an asset
- Knowledge of local food, food security and food politics is an asset.
Important note: All applicants must be between 15 and 30 years old and must not have previously participated in a Career Focus work experience placement. This is an internship through the Canadian Community Economic Development Network’s CreateAction Program.
