Community Involvement Intern - Elmwood Community Resource Centre

Job Summary:

Working with the Community Development Coordinator to assist residents and families who reside in the Chalmers area of Elmwood to:

  • Improve relations between the diverse residents in the area
  • Assist those with limited ability to employment capacity to find new ways to be employed, either by starting up a new business (up cycling, child minding training ands services), or connecting local employers to ensure they hire locally
  • Provide local knowledge of skills development and training
  • Improve community capacity and improved community will being
  • Increase community capacity through involvement of residents of Elmwood

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Community Development Coordinator and collaborate with residents to identify and address the discrete needs and issues faced by residents of Elmwood.
  • Improve the living conditions of residents through the creation of an area networks that will work together with the ECRCAA to address project identified community needs and challenges.
  • Lead activities that will act as a springboard for citizens-led renewal, resulting in a strategic framework and plan for future community actions
  • Initiate citizen-led renewal in the core area, it is critical to engage in an extensive community organizing and capacity building initiative

Academic/Educational Requirements:

  • Above normal computer literacy
  • Community Economic Development
  • Report writing
  • Survey Development and implementation
  • Ability to work in Microsoft Office Programs
  • Relevant certification or designation requirements
  • Program development including proposal development
  • Program management

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Must have excellent knowledge of community and city wide resources
  • Excellent written and oral communication in English.
  • Previous experience an asset
  • Approachable, warm, personable and patient
  • Excellent knowledge of resources available in Winnipeg
  • Organizing meetings and chairing
  • Effective Advocacy
  • Attend professional development appropriate to gaining knowledge in this field
  • Can demonstrate that working in the field of community economic development is a career goal

The job position is part of CreateAction, the Canadian CED Network Work Experience Program, funded by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.

Participants must also meet the following the criteria:

  • Be between the ages of 15 and 30 inclusively at the time of selection
  • Bea Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a protected person within the meaning of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial and/or territorial legislation and regulations
  • Be out-of-school
  • Be a post-secondary college or university graduate
  • Be not receiving Employment Insurance benefits
  • Can demonstrate a lack of labour market attachment to field of study (under-employed or unemployed)
  • Can demonstrate that working in the field of community economic development is a career goal
  • Has not previously participated in a Career Focus work experience
