Position summary:

Under the supervision of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) is a capable and positive leader committed to the purpose statement and values of Initiatives for Just Communities (IJC). The ED is a competent and resourceful individual with strong interpersonal, organizational and administrative skills, able to promote and support programs within IJC. Key responsibility of the Executive Director:

The primary responsibility of the Executive Director is to give direction and support to the day to day running of the organization.
The broad areas of responsibility are:

  • To carry out board policy and strategic ends
  • Programming
  • Personnel
  • Financial management


Key resources of the ED in fulfilling the responsibilities of her/his office.

  • The Board. The Board of Initiatives for Just Communities is comprised of individuals with various backgrounds, skills and training relevant to an inclusive view of community related to restoring, as much as possible, the well being of those caught in the victim/offender cycle. While one part of the Boards duties is governance, another part is to provide support in various ways to the Executive Director and the organization.
  • Key staff reporting to but also supporting the ED:
    • Financial manager
    • Program leaders


Deliverables for the Executive Director

  • A leadership and lifestyle which reflect the Christian purpose and values of the organization.
    • Participate in a Christian faith community
    • Model reconciliation and healing in daily interaction with the public, volunteers, core members and staff
    • Act with integrity, reflecting Christian respect for those served, including staff, volunteers and clients.
  • A partnership with the Board in discussing ongoing organizational challenges and successes as well as timely briefings on potential challenges and possible solutions. This may include assisting the Board as requested in:
    • establishing ongoing strategic goals/decisions
    • developing a decision making process
    • establishing policies
    • growing the organization.
  • Working in partnership with the Board and/or organizational resources, develop policies and supports for various Human Resource functions including but not limited to recruiting, maintaining/training sufficient and qualified personnel for the organization. (HR assistance is being negotiated with partner organizations.)
  • Finance:
    • Fundraising for the organisation
    • Oversight and presentation of financial reporting to the Board including:
    • Annual organizational budgets
    • Organizational audits
    • Oversight of service agreements and grants
    • Adhering to budgets – responsible handling of exceptions
    • Collaboration with financial manager for responsible management on all financial instruments/accounts/policies.
    • Maintenance of physical assets
  • Programs:
    • Support program leaders in the management of existing programs
    • Encourage and expedite cross program expertise and collaboration on ideas, support and where appropriate, interactions
    • Network with provincial agencies as well as similar service provider agencies on various levels
    • Seek opportunities for additional funding and clients
    • Support in the recruitment and interaction of volunteers and advisory committee members for programs.
  • Knowledge base:
    - Keep up to date generally and/or have designated expert on:
    • Various sectors of organization’s involvement.
    • Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
    • Restorative Justice
    • Intellectual disabilities and adult supported living
    • Effective programs for marginalized individuals
    • Effective management
    • General trends in the service provision industry


Qualifications:

Personal values:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the Christian purpose and values of the organization
  • Demonstrated experience/skills/training to carry out the deliverables of the above Executive Director position description.

Skills and experience:

  • Effective oral and written communication, conflict management, team building and interpersonal skills for diverse/ complex working situations
  • Experience working with a board (preferably a policy board)
  • Excellent visionary leadership
  • Proven management skills
  • 3-5 years of senior leadership experience in a relief/development organization or relevant health or social service sector.


Education:

  • Graduate degree from a recognized university in a relevant field or an undergraduate degree with significant life and work experience


Other:

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required
  • The applicant will be required to obtain a Criminal Record check and a Child Sexual Abuse Registry check
