Community Development Worker - Aboriginal Communities (Posting NO. 106655)
The City of Winnipeg, Community Services Department invites applications for the position of Community Development Worker I - Aboriginal Communities.
Responsibilities of this position include:
- Assists in the development and implementation of the City of Winnipeg's Aboriginal Youth Strategy.
- Manages special projects through grant contract administration, site visits, provision of support as needed to project leaders, budget monitoring.
- Acts as liaison between AYS coordinator, other City staff and project leaders.
- Ensures all required contract documents in place and monitors to ensure project objectives, time schedule and budget are met.
- Provides and maintains clear, and complete written records as required.
- Assists in the development of community based partnerships within Winnipeg's high need neighbourhoods and Aboriginal communities, as well as innovative partnerships with public, private, and non-profit groups.
- Gathers community input and fostering community engagement; facilitating collaborative planning by residents and the community.
- Assists in the planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of a variety of programs and projects related to neighbourhood revitalization and community capacity building.
- Assists in the assembly, collection, analysis, and dissemination of community data, information, and knowledge.
- Assists in facilitating a coordinated, integrated departmental response to help resolve community issues.
- Monitoring budget expenditures and assisting with budget preparation for community development programs and services.
- Performs other related duties consistent with the classification as assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- A High School graduate and courses or training in the applied social sciences or community development or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Experience and demonstrated ability in community development or group development work, including the fostering of community capacity building in Winnipeg's high needs neighbourhood and Aboriginal communities.
- Knowledge of the culture and issues impacting the Aboriginal community.
- Knowledge of human behavior as it relates to community development and community groups.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in community development project management.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, supervise and evaluate community development programs with minimum supervision. Ability to work with priority populations in diverse cultural environments.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to speak an Aboriginal language would be an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to impart leadership skills to the community and conduct workshops in assigned community development areas.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain healthy working relationships with the public, the community, other civic employees, and representatives of other organizations and groups.
- Ability to establish work priorities and schedule.
- Ability to problem solve and communicate orally in an effective and courteous manner.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Possess a working knowledge of MS Office software, specifically Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
- General knowledge of the political and administrative structure.
- Possess knowledge of the budget process and monitoring of expenditures/revenues.
- Possess a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's License.
- A vehicle is required.
- Preference will be given to applicants of Aboriginal descent.
