To participate in this web discussion participants need to review the Research Ethics Information Letter (link is external) and Consent Form (link is external), which outline the nature of the Study and how the information collected will be used.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact Amanda (community at foodsecurecanad.org (link sends e-mail)). 

Anyone is welcome to participate, however we are especially interested in hearing from those living and working in the North (defined for the purposes of this Study as Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Nunatsiavut and Nunavik).  The focus of the conversation will be on the federal policy and program recommendations developed out of the Study.  A copy of these will be sent to those registered in advance and we ask that participants come prepared to discuss them.

Over a 3 week period, participants will engage in active learning and discussion about the causes and impacts of poverty and best practices in how to alleviate and end it. 

The Summer Institute offers courses that respond to the material, social and spiritual dimensions of poverty providing both the knowledge and skill base to work effectively in the practice of poverty reduction. The program will consist of 3 one-week intensive courses which may be eligible for credit for Ambrose University degree programs.

An exploration of the global Sustainable Development Goals and their historical development, their national application, and their integration into Albertan business, government, and civil society. The course will move from a broad theoretical understanding of a United Nations framework to an applied survey of how such goals and indicators can be applied to improve society through collaboration and innovation. Instruction will consist of lectures, experienced guest speakers and co-lecturers, reflective discussion, and case studies.

An examination of the elements of transformative collaborative leadership in order to equip students in the practice of community organizing, teaching them to reflect on their leadership capacity by engaging in a social change project. These skills are important because leadership that unites communities to take shared action is critical for social change and for developing strong communities.

This one week course provides an overview of co-operative enterprises and co-operative development as an effective approach to poverty reduction. Learn about the co-operative movement, its history in Canada and internationally, and the values and principles of co-operatives and their contribution to resolving social, environmental, and economic challenges.

This course is being offered as part of the annual Poverty Studies Summer Institute, KNOW Poverty. The Summer Institute brings together a diverse learning community of service practitioners, policy makers, university students and persons with a lived experience of poverty to reflect on the causes, impacts and solutions to poverty. Last year we had a dynamic group of over 100 learners from the social service, government, faith and academic sectors who shared, learned and connected with each other.

Social Value Canada's SROI Accreditation course is delivered by accredited trainers and SROI practitioners.

DAY 1 – How to do an SROI analysis

Day one is a practical, step-by-step introduction to the SROI process. We will begin with some theory, but the process is best learnt by trying it, so candidates will learn how to develop an impact map – the heart of the SROI process – and explore appropriate real life examples.

DAY 2 – SROI Practitioner Training

Day two covers in depth, more theoretical issues behind SROI including valuation techniques and counterfactuals, as well as discussing examples of best practice at different levels of rigour.
