Social Finance Connects: Investment Funds

12pm to 1pm Eastern Time

This webinar will explore potential models for creating an enabling environment and architecture for social finance in Canada. This will include looking at effective facilitation as well as incentives for retail investors and financial institutions which will unlock significant capital to tackle Canada’s most critical social and environmental challenges. We will have an overview of replicable models for attendees interested in starting a fund and we will also provide a greater understanding of the opportunities and challenges involved in the development of social finance investment funds.

Format: 30-minute presentation followed by 30 minute Q & A session

About Derek Ballantyne

Derek Ballantyne joined New Market Funds as a Venture Partner in January 2015. Mr. Ballantyne is CEO of Community Forward Fund, a registered investment fund manager overseeing a loan fund for non-profit and charitable organizations working across Canada. Mr. Ballantyne also works with Encasa Financial Inc., a mutual fund with close to $500 M in assets of non-profit and related entities. Mr. Ballantyne worked with Build Toronto as CEO from 2009 to 2011, a start-up municipal development corporation designed to leverage value from surplus City of Toronto assets. Prior to this Mr. Ballantyne was CEO of Toronto Community Housing from 1998 to 2011, Canada’s largest housing corporation. In this capacity he was responsible for the development and redevelopment of an extensive portfolio of affordable and market housing. Prior to this Mr. Ballantyne worked for over 10 years with affordable housing agencies as a senior executive and Board Chair. Mr. Ballantyne has recently participated in the launch of a new impact investment fund in affordable ownership housing, and assisted in the development of other social finance ventures.

Emerging Co-op Research Showcase Webinar

Presenters

  • Justin Ellerby is a student in the MBA in Community Economic Development program at Cape Breton University, Sydney, Nova Scotia, with a background in housing co-ops and multi-sector co-op development. His presentation will be an exploration of the Emerging Co-op Scholars Network website, a new platform for students and practitioners to share and build opportunities, resources, ideas, and connections.
  • Samira Nuhanovic, (Bosnia-Herzegovina) is a PhD candidate at the International Doctoral school in Local development and global dynamics at the University of Trento. Having in mind the importance of certain cooperative principles, her research aims to investigate the ways in which organizational structures, and consequently productive and marketing activities of agricultural cooperatives, can be diversified in order for them to have a positive impact on rural development in Bosnia and Herzegovina through the reduction of rural poverty.
  • Andrius Ragainis is a Master's in Environmental Studies student at York University. He focuses hisresearch on social accounting systems and co-operative enterprises. In the webinar presentation, Andrius will present his ongoingresearch of how Ontario's co-operatives implement social accounting. Presentation will also include a short overview of the existing social accounting systems.

What is CoopZone & How Can it be Useful to You?

2pm to 2:45pm Eastern Time

CoopZone is the Network of co-operative developers, and individuals and organizations with interest in co-op development. It also includes a network of lawyers and related professionals, in the CoopZone Legal Network, and other professional service providers such as accountants all of whom work with co-ops. It offers a variety of services including webinars and a distance training program on co-op development. It is based in Canada but is open to participation by people in other parts of the world.

Social Finance Connects: Social Media for Non-Profits

This webinar will provide insights on developing and implementing effective sector capacity-building programs through which organizations can learn to integrate social media, network building, and relationship marketing best practices. Social media offers non-profits a unique opportunity to network with policy makers, colleagues and media to shape discussions around the issues that matter the most.

Joyce Hsu is the Communications Lead at TechSoup Canada. TechSoup connects Canadian charities, non-profits and libraries to donated or discounted technology products, and also produces tech learning resources to empower and equip the non-profit sector. Joyce manages TechSoup Canada's communications including social media, blogs, events, email campaigns, branding, and graphic design. With previous experience as a fundraiser and program manager, Joyce understands how tech can empower non-profit staff from all levels. She has a deep love for the world of philanthropy and seeks to help the non-profit sector be more efficient and effective with tech.

Scaling Impact Workshop

This workshop is designed to help leadership teams of 3-4 (including board members) start to develop a plan to scale their impact by get greater clarity on:

  • The initial conditions from which the organization is starting;
  • What, exactly, they want to scale;
  • Their motivation behind the decision to scale impact;
  • Different options for scaling;
  • The opportunities, barriers, risks and limitations associated with their scaling strategy;
  • Next steps in developing a scaling strategy.

The Innoweave Scaling Impact Workshop builds on the Innoweave Introduction to Scaling Impact webinar. You are encouraged to view this webinar online prior to submitting your application to the workshop.

Where: This distance workshop will be hosted via Cisco WebEx. A link to the meeting and workshop documents will be provided to successful applicants.
