Citizen-Led Sustainable Change March webinar: Vivre St. Michel en Santé

St. Michel is one of Montreal’s oldest suburbs. Since 2004, Vivre St. Michel en Santé (for a Healthy St. Michel) has employed an innovative urban and social revitalization strategy that has rebranded a neighbourhood once known for its high crime rates and lack of services into one that is known for its active and unified citizens and coordinated action. Particularly innovative are the processes used build “community” among a transient, diverse and largely immigrant population. Vivre St. Michel en Santé takes an integrated approach involving citizens, community organizations, donors and government offices. Collectively, their efforts have helped residents, with its mix of new immigrants, experience a better quality of life in the areas of art, culture, housing, security, health, sports, leisure, transportation and access to services.

Co-ops 101 Webinar

Co-ops 101 is BCCA's introduction to co-operatives and the co-op movement. Designed to be relevant and interesting everyone from new co-operators, employees at co-ops and credit unions, or anyone interested in the co-op movement, it's an excellent way to learn more about co-ops. This event will be held by webinar only; participants will require an internet connection and telephone.

That's why we're here. Come and learn all about the co-op sector, co-operatives, how and why to start one, and how the BCCA can help you as you think of ways to build a co-operative economy.

Learn about the history of co-ops, different kinds of co-ops ranging from consumer co-ops to worker co-ops to nonprofit co-ops at this workshop.
 
Participants will also explore how to take their idea towards the development of a co-op, including:
  • The co-op development path
  • Assessing a business idea
  • Feasibility and business planning
  • The nuts and bolts of starting a co-op
  • Support and assistance from the BCCA and the co-op sector

If you are representing a group that is exploring co-operation as a business idea, taking a Co-ops 101 course allows your group to register with the BCCA as an "Emerging Co-op" and access ongoing BCCA support, including access to co-op development experts, ongoing advice, discounted training and education, and more.

Introduction to Collective Impact

Collective Impact enables a group of organizations to address a major challenge by developing and working toward a common agenda that fundamentally changes population level outcomes in a community.  When successful, communities solve big complex challenges (e.g. poverty, unemployment of disadvantaged populations) or make substantial societal shifts (e.g. more sustainable food systems) by creating a shared multi sector understanding of the problem, a common vision and an action plan with shared measurements and reinforcing activities.

This webinar is brought to you by Innoweave and the Victoria Foundation.  This webinar will be run by Michelle Colussi from the Canadian Centre for Community Renewal and will review the basic concepts and examples of the Collective Impact approach, and will provide an overview of the Innoweave Collective Impact workshop.

Dr. Megan McKenzie is currently the President of Rural Roots Food Cooperative in Boissevain, MB. She was involved in conflict resolution and democracy work in Colombia, the Middle East, Ireland, DR Congo and the inner-city of Winnipeg before returning to rural Manitoba to raise her young family and work as a conflict specialist. She holds a PhD from Trinity College, Dublin. 
 
Co-Facilitator: Robert Guilford
Robert Guilford was instrumental in founding the Harvest Moon Society and the Harvest Moon Learning Centre in Clearwater. He has been involved in mentoring new chicken farmers in Northern Manitoba. Music lovers know him as one of the emcees at the Harvest Moon Festival, held every fall in Clearwater.

Using Cooperatives and Social Enterprises to Create Resilient Rural Communities

Cooperative and social enterprises are responding to issues rural Canadian communities face, such as declining populations and the loss of services associated with it. Three events examine how cooperatives and other social enterprises are being used to help create resilient small towns and rural communities. 
 
Case studies and examples will be explored; participants will have the opportunity to share experiences and concerns from their own rural community. Discussions will include how they assess cooperatives and social enterprises, and will address related concerns and resources needed to start up and sustain co-operatives.
