The Systems Change Evaluation CanvasHow will you evaluate efforts to create systems change? Through our work at Tamarack, it has become clear that there is no one answer. The right approach depends on your situation, the type of change, and many other constraints that are unique. As demand for systems change initiatives has increased, so has the need to evaluate this type of work, though this type of evaluation is still emerging. To respond to this need, over the past year we have been developing a planning tool for evaluating Systems Change efforts — a Systems Change Evaluation Canvas.

Mark Cabaj

Mark is President of the consulting company From Here to There and an Associate of Tamarack Institute.

Mark’s current focus is on developing practical ways to understand, plan and evaluate efforts to address complex issues (e.g. neighbourhood renewal, poverty and homelessness, community safety, educational achievement and health). He has first-hand knowledge of using evaluation as a policy maker, philanthropist, and activist, and has played a big role in promoting the emerging practice of developmental evaluation in Canada.

Galen is a Consulting Director of the Tamarack Institute’s Community Innovation Idea Area. He is passionate about working with community organizations to help build and scale new ideas that deepen their impact. An experienced design, innovation, and co-creation consultant, at the core of his work are approaches that help organizations engage with those who are impacted by their services and test new programs and services with minimal investment. Over the past five years, Galen has used these approaches to help Fortune 500 companies and non-profit organizations across North America reinvent the services and programs they provide. Galen is an experienced human-centred design coach and holds a Master’s degree in Engineering Design and Innovation from Northwestern University.

Congress 2019: 360º of Co-operationThe 2019 edition of Co-operative Congress is being held at the Chateau Laurier Hotel in beautiful Quebec City. This year, Congress will feature a full day of tours to co-operatives in and around the old city on June 18 followed by a welcome reception that evening in the Cour intérieure (patio) of the Hotel.

The conference begins on June 19 with a plenary session in the main ballroom of the Chateau Laurier with special guest speakers and keynote presentations until noon. Six breakout sessions are planned for that afternoon in more interactive settings. 

The evening of June 19 will feature our annual awards ceremony celebrating the Co-operative(s) of the Year, the Emerging Co-operator Award, and our most prestigious personal award for careers of distinction, The Achievement Award. The awards will be presented during the gala dinner.

Over these decades, the Chantier de l’économie sociale and its partners have built strong alliances with social movements and governments and have created an ecosystem of support that has attracted interest at a pan-Canadian and international level.

What were the key steps in this process and what are the lessons learned that are still pertinent today? Nancy Neamtan, ex-CEO of the Chantier de l’économie sociale, has completed a synthesis of the history of the Quebec social economy movement, based on her personal experience that began in the mid-80’s in the Southwest of Montreal and continues today through her on-going involvement in the social economy movement in Quebec and internationally.

Nancy NeamtanNancy Neamtan, strategic advisor for the Chantier and for TIESS

Former CEO of the Chantier de l’économie sociale (1996-2015), Nancy Neamtan is presently a strategic advisor for the Chantier and for TIESS (Territoires innovantes en économie sociale et solidaire), a Quebec-wide centre for liaison and knowledge transfer in social innovation and the social and solidarity economy. Mme Neamtan is active in the field of social finance in collaboration with the Chantier de l’économie Trust, a social finance institution whose mission is to make capital accessible to social economy enterprises’. Before her involvement in the founding and direction of the Chantier, Ms Neamtan worked in the field of community economic development in the southwest of Montreal.

Ms Neamtan has over thirty years experience in the field of the social economy, social finance and community economic development. She is recognised nationally and internationally for her experience in the field and is the recipient of two honorary doctorates as well as the Order of Canada and the Order of Quebec.
