The purpose of this study is to explore the current state of information technology and its application in northern Manitoba, in order to develop best practices, and identify gaps and overlaps in programs and services. The research focuses on three communities representing northern Manitoba; Gillam (Urban Industrial), Wabowden (Northern Affairs/Metis Settlement) and Nelson House (Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation). An effective information technology strategy has always been identified as a critical component for community development strategies in northern Manitoba and also a mechanism for the development of long-term sustainability. Types of technology included in the assessment include towers, servers, ISPs, satellite technology, telecommunications equipment as well as public Internet access sites and associated equipment. Tools include statistics and graphs representing the levels of use of these types of technology in the three Northern Manitoba communities profiled.
