Join us at the 2013 conference to focus on healthy communities and learn that the best planning gets implemented through good design and has a strong regard for who is served by the design. Learn how good design functions and what form it takes within Healthy, Wealthy and Wise communities.

Hosted by the Macdonald-Ritchot Planning District, this event brings together elected officials, municipal administrators, educators and students, and public and private sector planners for three days of learning about the key issues facing planners in Manitoba today.

Keynote Speakers:

Mary-Ellen Tyler, Professor of Environmental Design, University of Calgary - former Winnipeg resident - speaking on planning for wellbeing by design, from an environmental planning perspective, with a particular concern for tapping ecosystem services and the connection with land use and development planning; it’s all eco-logical! (Day 1 Keynote, Pre-Conference Symposium and Workshop)
 
Dennis McKnight, President, The Innovators, Calgary and Vancouver - former Winnipeg resident and futures consultant - speaking on big-picture themes, trends to note, and positioning our province for a ‘healthy, wealthy and wise’ future; appreciating the wellbeing dividend - how well are we? how better could we be? (Day 2 Keynote and Pre-Conference Workshop)
 
Dewey Thorbeck, Director of the Center for Rural Design, University of Minnesota, St Paul MN, speaking on rural design for smart growth and wise land use - negotiating the urban/rural interface, with a concern for designing with nature and respecting a sense of place (Pre-Conference Symposium and Workshop; and Day 1 Concurrent Sessions).
 
Allan Wallis, Professor of Public Policy, School of Public Affairs, University of Colorado, Denver, speaking on the new regionalism in city-regions and rural regions; from regional cooperation to urban/rural collaboration - taking partnering to new heights and breadths (Pre-Conference Symposium and workshop, Day 1 Lunch Talk, and Concurrent Session panelist).
 
Karen Lee, MD, Director, Built Environment and Active Design, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, speaking on active design - making wellbeing part of our daily practice; building it into our planning (Day 2 Concurrent Session, Lunch talk and Post-Conference Workshop).
