Rural Communities: The Root to Health

You are here

Date:
3 October, 2013 to 4 October, 2013

Co-hosted by the Haliburton Communities in Action Committee and the Ontario Healthy Communities Coalition (OHCC), the 2013 Healthy Communities Symposium will be:

Thursday, October 3rd &
Friday, October 4th
Minden Community Centre
55 Parkside St., Minden, ON  K0M 2K0

Each year OHCC hosts a Healthy Communities symposium in conjunction with its Annual General Meeting. It is held in various locations around the province, and hosted in partnership with a local organization. The purpose of the symposium is to provide a forum for learning and sharing that will inspire and support those that are involved in creating healthy communities.

For 2013, OHCC welcomes the opportunity to partner with the Haliburton Communities in Action Committee (CIA) to bring the symposium to Haliburton County. The CIA is a community-based coalition concerned about health, safety and the environment with the mission of “making Haliburton County a healthy, active community through active transportation planning”. In 2012, OHCC recognized the work of the Communities in Action Committee and presented them with the Sheila Lupson Healthy Community Recognition Award.

The symposium is being held on October 3rd and 4th, 2013 to coincide with the first weekend of the Haliburton Studio Art Tour. This is also a great time of year to visit the Haliburton Highlands in its fall colours.

We would like to acknowledge the generous support of the Haliburton County Development Corporation and the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit for this event.

Theme: Healthy Rural Communities

There are many common challenges faced in rural areas across Ontario when it comes to creating healthy communities. There is also a growing interest in how rural communities can build on their strengths to overcome these challenges. The 2013 symposium will provide the opportunity to showcase some of Haliburton County’s healthy community initiatives, share success stories and provide others from across Ontario with ideas that they can apply in their home communities.

Through a combination of workshops, presentations and site visits, participants will have an opportunity to learn about rural economic development, how Haliburton County has become a leader and innovator in creating healthy rural communities. Individuals will gain a better understanding of local initiatives and healthy communities in general.
