On February 27th we will be welcoming Dr. Eric Holt-Gimenez who will be discussing "Food Rebellions: Crisis and the Hunger for Justice".

In 2008 and again in 2010 record food prices pushed the number of hungry people in the world to over 1 billion–despite record global harvests and record profits for the world's agrifood monopolies. The proximate causes of the food crisis have appeared in in the media and are regularly debated among government leaders, industry and multilateral organizations.

Along with soaring food prices and hungry people comes violence and conflict. Violence is not only caused by hunger, but impedes food security of people around the world. Follow these links for more information

How We Grow, Share and Eat: Moving Towards Just and Sustainable Food & Farming Systems

Food and farming are a fundamental component of human society. Yet in the face of a burgeoning global economy many people face a scarcity of food while many other people face an over-abundance of it. Moreover environmental challenges such as declining agricultural biodiversity and growing reliance in chemical inputs require careful reflection on the state and direction of food and farming systems.

Over the course of the 2013-14 academic year, Menno Simons College will host a series of lecturers by distinguished speakers addressing the topic of “How We Grow, Share & Eat: Towards Just and Sustainable Food & Farming Systems.” The series will be comprised of a series of public lectures, academic courses, social media engagement, and the publication of the collected works of the Esau Distinguished Scholars.
