Board policies are the guidelines describing the expectations for meetings, board members, the board, staff and volunteers.  As a board member, how do you know what you are supposed to do?  Do you leave meetings feeling that your time was well used, the board got a lot of work done, and it was a meaningful use of your time?  If not, your board could use some policy development.   Every board today is expected to have a Board Manual that provides a guide to how they will conduct their business and provide accountability and transparency to their stakeholders.

Learning outcomes include:

  • Differences and similarities between Constitution, Bylaws and Policy
  • How clear policy makes meeting effective and efficient
  • Using policy to orient new members and create common ground
  • A pathway to decision making that can reduce conflict
  • A reference for board behavior, accountability and transparency
  • How to create and utilize a Board Policy manual.
