WEST BROADWAY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (WBDC)
WBDC is a non-for-profit organization working to coordinate neighbourhood renewal in our inner-city community. WBDC works with residents and stakeholders toward environmentally sustainable, social and economic revitalization of the West Broadway neighbourhood.
The Good Food Club (GFC) aims to empower residents with knowledge and access to healthy food for an active and healthy life, especially those vulnerable to food insecurity. Activities include: food boxes, community dinners, farm trips and a vegetable market. Residents are invited to become members, and can earn "sweat equity points" ie working in exchange for food.
The GFC program is looking to build on and expand its activities to include a social enterprise. The purpose of this internship is to work with interested GFC members and available resources to develop a business plan for a food product using inputs from Manitoba producers.
WBDC is able to offer this position thanks to the Canadian CED Network Emerging Leaders
Manitoba Project funded by the Winnipeg Partnership Agreement. This position is intended to provide recent graduates with their first work experience in a leadership role.
Responsibilities:
o Develop a three year business plan on a social enterprise food product using ingredients
grown locally with interested GFC members
o Do research on similar enterprises in other locations and tap into resources for business,
social enterprise and food product development
o Develop the food product by "testing" the recipe and selling at 2 - 3 local events, with
interested GFC members
o Expand current GFC activities such as weekly vegetable market
o Support GFC activities and work with the GFC Coordinator
o Participate as a member of the WBDC staff team at staff meetings, staff occasional
community meetings and events
Qualifications:
o Knowledge and/ or experience in Community Development, Community Economic
Development, food security, business plan development and financial planning
o Experience working with diverse groups of people, including people with low incomes
and people with multiple barriers to the job market. Experience doing community
outreach and conflict mediation
o Ability to be self-directed, work collaboratively and network with organizations
o Post-secondary education in relevant field such as CD/ CED, urban planning, sociology,
politics or business administration.
o Pro-active leader, positive attitude, enjoys taking initiative, works well independently and
in a team.
o Valid Driver's license, criminal record check, child abuse registry check, CPR/First Aid

Salary and hours of work:
$15/hour; 35 hrs/week Monday - Friday 9:00 - 5:00 pm. Some evening and weekend hours
required.
Term of work and vacation:
This is an internship sponsored by the Canadian CED Network from May 12, 2008 - October 24, 2008. In lieu of vacation pay the intern shall receive one week off paid for holidays during the work period.
