DMSMCA is a non-profit community renewal organization. We work with residents and stakeholders towards social, cultural, economic and environmentally sustainable renewal and revitalization of the Daniel McIntyre / St. Matthews neighbourhoods. Our vision is to take a holistic community approach towards the issue of neighbourhood safety with a strong emphasis on prevention, organising and empowering residents, valuing work with youth and supporting community connecting as crucial pieces of a long-term crime reduction strategy.

Job Objectives and Responsibilities:

1. Community Safety

To coordinate the development and implementation of the Daniel McIntyre / St. Matthews (DM/SM) Community Safety Plan 2009 - 2012, in association with local residents and stakeholders and to report on and carry out evaluations of the implementation of these plans.

Tasks will include:

  • Facilitate, organise, draft and implement a DM/SM Community Safety Plan and Priorities, using participatory processes (e.g. neighbourhood consultations, etc), together with residents, business owners and other stakeholders;
  • Organise, coordinate and facilitate a participatory DM/SM safety audit;
  • Coordinate and support local community safety activities
  • Organize and facilitate targeted block meetings;
  • Improve understanding of the root causes of crime in the neighbourhood;
  • Coordinate and support the DMSMCA Community Safety Committee;
  • Improve access to crime prevention information for residents, business owners;
  • Outreach and network with various community safety stakeholders.

2. Youth Engagement

To coordinate and facilitate youth engagement and outreach in the DM/SM community.

Tasks will include:

  • Coordinate and support local youth engagement and recreation activities;
  • Provide support for the Youth Outreach joint program;
  • Outreach and network with relevant community partners (e.g. schools, youth programs, etc.);

Qualification and Experience:

Education:
Required: Bachelor of Arts and/or Master of Urban Planning or Community Development Worker Diploma and/or equivalent education and experience.

Experience:
Two - three years of related work experience in community development/ community based programming, planning, communication and implementation with particular experience in community safety and/or youth engagement.

Knowledge:

  • Understanding and knowledge of the root causes of crime and community development approaches to crime prevention and promotion of safety.
  • Knowledge of the Daniel McIntyre St. Matthews Community (preference given to DM/SM residents).
  • Knowledge of CED principles.
  • Experience and knowledge of conflict mediation.

  • Computer capability.

Wage:
$16.50 / hour

Hours of Work:
Up to 40 hours/week; some evening and weekend hours required. This is a ten month term position. Continuation of the position depends on funding availability.

To start immediately.
