West Broadway Development Corporation (WBDC) is a not-for-profit organization that coordinates neighbourhood renewal in our inner-city community. WBDC works with residents and stakeholders toward environmentally sustainable, social and economic revitalization of the West Broadway neighbourhood.
This position will support five community garden sites, one urban agriculture site and composting activities in West Broadway. The goals are as follows:
- Support and build capacity in the local management of community gardens and urban agriculture
- Support the development of the composting program
- Provide educational opportunities with residents
- Uphold the goals of the new West Broadway Green space Development Plan
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate volunteer involvement and logistics in three community gardens
- Support the development of two new garden sites
- Support volunteers at the Urban Agriculture site
- Work with each community garden committee to develop committee structures and management systems
- Work with local gardeners to develop a community garden handbook
- Support the creation of a vision and three year strategic plan with local gardeners
- Work with the volunteer Compost Team and supervise the summer youth Compost Coordinator
- Work with residents and stakeholders to create a composting strategy for West Broadway
- Support the existing six compost sites and develop two new compost demonstration sites
- Supervise two Green space Workers in the summer months
- Provide environmental education opportunities with local residents
- Communications on greening, gardening and composting activities
- Report writing, conduction evaluations, tracking project activities
Qualifications and experience:
- Post secondary education in related discipline such as Community Development, Conflict Mediation, Administration
- Horticultural, gardening and composting training, knowledge and experience
- Experience organizing committees, chairing meetings, taking minutes
- Experience organizing and leading workshops, sharing skills and building capacity
- Knowledge and experience in Community Development and Community Economic Development, working with people from diverse backgrounds, experience working in the inner-city
- Experience supervising others
- Experience and training in conflict mediation, strong inter-personal skills
- Pro-active leader, positive attitude, enjoys taking initiative, works well independently and in a team
- Good problem-solving skills
- Excellent oral and written work
- Proven experience delivering results on time and on budget
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, keyboarding
Wage and hours of work:
$17 / hour; 35 hours/ week. General hours are Monday - Friday 9 - 5. Evenings and weekend work required. This is a two year term position.
