Position Overview
The EAL Specialist will be responsible for working across all SEED program areas and make assessments of current program accessibility for immigrants and newcomers to Canada. This position will provide recommendations for change that will help SEED work more effectively with these communities. The EAL specialist will liaise closely with and act as a resource for all program areas.
Skill Set
• A value base related to building healthy communities and empowering marginalized people
• Able to work in a dynamic and diverse non-profit organization environment
• TESL Certificate or equivalent qualification
• Experience teaching language to clients/students with a range of CLB levels
• Comfortable teaching groups who are multilevel in terms of language
• Experience working with clientele from diverse educational backgrounds that may include literacy challenges in first language
• Experience in teaching English for Specific purposes an asset
• Ability to work with a diverse clientele who represent a variety of cultural perspectives
• Experience in working with low-income people
• Strong facilitation and training program delivery skills
• Strong knowledge of community supports for immigrant and newcomers to Manitoba and an understanding of the the settlment process
• High level of proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software
• Good organizational, administration and analytical skills
• Research and program design skills
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Ability to problem-solve and implement creative solutions
• Small business experience would be an asset
• Business counseling skills and experience would be an asset
• Understanding of business concepts and financial procedures would be an asset
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Director of Operations:
1. Conduct a gap analysis of current supports & services
• Work collaboratively with program managers and other staff to identify service gaps relevant to working with immigrant and newcomer participants
• Develop and implement strategies to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers to participating in SEED programs.
2. Language supports
• Integrate language development activities into existing SEED programming (Money Management and Build a Business programs)
• Develop and deliver supplementary EAL classroom material to support participants in the Money Management and Build a Business programs (ex: pre-teaching key vocabulary, introducing key concepts in accessible language, etc.)
• Develop and deliver workshops to build appropriate communication skills for the Canadian business context (ex: Canadian business culture, communicating with customers, suppliers, financial institutions, etc.)
• Analyze the language demands of curriculum content and classroom activities and make suggestions for modifications for immigrant and newcomer participants.
• Identify and assess the levels and needs of participants learning English as an additional language, and to provide individual support when required
• Provide on-going technical assistance to immigrant and newcomer participants where language is a barrier.
3. Reports and administrative responsibilities
• Collaborating with program staff, prepare a work plan that incorporates results of the organizational scan
• Prepare monthly reports on progress as set out in the work plan
• Perform monthly data collection activities for program evaluation
4. External Relations
• Develop and maintain positive relationships with immigrant and newcomer serving organizations and groups.
• Promote SEED programs to immigrant and newcomer serving organizations and groups
• Develop SEED staff knowledge of immigrant/newcomer community resources and cultivate network of these resources
5. Other
• Work as part a team to identify and facilitate community economic development in Winnipeg
• Attend staff meetings and other training sessions as appropriate
• On-going professional development
Position Details:
• Salary range for this position (full-time) is $45,000 - $55,000 DOQ. Note: this is a 75% position (30 hours/week).
