Position: “Good Green Jobs” Project Coordinator, 23 weeks at 37.5 hours per week
Salary: $15.00 per hour
Background:
This is an internship position for an individual interested in working in community economic development. It is offered through the Canadian CED Network's CreateAction program, funded by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada. The intern will work on a project to increase access to good “green” jobs in Ottawa in the residential renovation sector, particularly for young adults facing barriers in the labour market. The main activities will be:
- facilitating work placements and skill development in the green residential renovation sector for young adults facing barriers in the labour market
- working with private sector renovators on a strategy to increase the market for green / sustainable residential renovations in Ottawa.
Duties:
- Serve as the secretariat for the project advisory group
- Expand partnership engagement in the project - private sector residential renovators, suppliers, government, voluntary sector, schools
- Negotiate co-operative work placements in green residential renovations for young adults facing barriers in the labour market
- Assist with an environmental scan of the opportunities, barriers, and needs with respect to expanding Ottawa’s green / sustainable residential renovation sectors and enhancing its’ employment potential for groups experiencing barriers
- Assist in the development and implementation of pilot projects as appropriate
- Develop and implement a communications strategy
- Help to design and implement an evaluation using performance measures along a triple bottom line (economic, social and environmental)
Requirements:
- Good spoken and written English
- Strong organizational skills
- Capacity to work independently or in a group and to collaborate on a project
- Proven ability to work in a professional and respectful manner with the public including the private sector and voluntary sector
- Experience working with committees to accomplish results on time
- Strong interest in community economic development
- Good computer skills (Excel, Word, Access, Publisher, email)
- Relevant education or equivalent personal experience
Assets:
- Project planning or community development experience
- Experience in employment placement or labour market development initiatives
- Knowledge of “green” / sustainable technologies relevant for residential renovations
- Knowledge of residential renovations or the residential renovation sector
- Fluency in French
- Experience organizing meetings or events
- Facilitation skills
- Public speaking
- Knowledge of communications / public relations
- Knowledge of community based social research methodologies
Applicant Criteria:
The position is funded under a special program of the Federal government. Under the funding agreement, the successful candidate must meet the following criteria:
- Be between the ages of 15 and 30 inclusively at the time of selection
- Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a protected person within the meaning of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial and/or territorial legislation and regulations
- Be a post-secondary college or university graduate and out of school
- Not be receiving Employment Insurance benefits
- Be under-employed or unemployed
- Not previously have participated in a Career Focus work experience placement
- Applications are particularly encouraged from individuals who are immigrants, have a disability or are of Aboriginal identity
Terms: October 4, 2010 to March 18, 2011, 37.5 hours per week
