BACKGROUND

The Canadian CED Network is inviting applications for a work experience position based out of the Momentum office in Calgary, AB.

This position is offered through the Canadian CED Network’s CreateAction internship program, which is the only national internship program that provides paid learning opportunities for young people to do community economic development (CED) in their own communities.

The successful candidate will work both with Momentum (a CED organization that delivers programs for individuals living on low-incomes) and Thrive (a CED network focused on promoting and advancing CED in Calgary housed at the Momentum office) to support environmental/green projects that are currently being pursued.

Community Economic Development is a unique approach to place-based poverty reduction that simultaneously addresses social and environmental concerns while increasing economic opportunities for individuals living on low-incomes.

INTERNSHIP QUALIFICATIONS

This program is funded by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and its intention is to give out-of-school post-graduate youth (15-30 years) who have a career focus in CED a relevant five-month work experience placement. Applicants must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a protected person within the meaning of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. This placement is fully subsidized by the Canadian CED Network.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Community Economic Development Facilitator at Momentum, the Green Projects Assistant is responsible for supporting the advancement of Thrive’s Green Collar Jobs initiative, while also supporting the implementation of Momentum’s greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction strategy. The successful candidate will also participate in peer learning activities to support the Canadian CED Network.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Green Collar Jobs

  • Review and identify appropriate funding sources and write proposals for a “green” trades training stream at Momentum.
  • Develop a training curriculum focused on trades jobs in green construction in partnership with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and others as appropriate.
  • Provide logistical support for Committee meetings and other events as necessary.

Momentum’s GHG Reduction Strategy

  • Support Momentum’s Sustainability Audit Group (SAG) with developing the initiatives, information management systems and processes for successfully reducing Momentum’s GHG emissions.

Peer Mentorship Program

  • In partnership with CCEDNet and Thrive, develop and facilitate a public event in order to engage the local community in CED knowledge sharing and action.

Other Responsibilities (as necessary)

  • Provide logistical support for Thrive events including food and beverage liaison, technical and IT set up and RSVP management. Provide research and writing support for various Thrive publications. Conduct outreach and promotion at relevant events

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary education in a related field of study
  • Demonstrated strong research and writing skills
  • Excellent oral and written skills
  • Experience working in non-profits or community-based organizations
  • Experience working in an office environment
  • Knowledge of community economic development theory and practice
  • Adaptable to a new fast-paced work environment
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills
  • Positive attitude Self-starter and takes initiative
  • Ability to work in a team and independently
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Bilingualism (English, French) is an asset but not required

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This position is based at the Momentum office in Calgary, AB and reports to the Community Economic Development Facilitator
  • Requires extensive computer use
  • 37.5 hours per week - involves overtime work at peak periods
  • Salary is $15 an hour
  • Some travel may be required
  • There will be a 3 month probationary period.
