POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Executive Director (ED), the After School Program Coordinator is an innovative and self-motivated individual committed to the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba's (IRCOM) vision and mandate of empowering newcomer families to integrate into the wider community through affordable transitional housing, programs, and services. The ASPC is a ‘people person’ who is a creative, vibrant, flexible, efficient and resourceful, person with strong interpersonal, organizational and administrative skills, able to meet the challenges of working with a culturally diverse group of people. The ideal candidate will exhibit and uphold core values of respect, non-violence, equality, fairness and team work.
OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this position is to promote healthy living and community building through active participation in year-round recreation and education programs. This objective is achieved through building partnerships with other social service organizations, community groups, and government agency. The end goal is to empower participants to develop a sense of confidence and belonging that would ensure their successful transition to life in Canada.
DUTIES:
Under the direction of the Executive Director, the ASPC will oversee the following activities:
Participant Engagement
- Ensure ongoing engagement with newcomer participants living at IRCOM House and / or within the community
- Mentor at-risk youth and design specific interventions to help them reach their
potential
Creation and maintenance of community partnerships and networks
- Represent IRCOM in relevant partnerships and coalitions working with youth
- Build and maintain a strong relationship with local schools and organizations for
the benefit of the newcomer children and youth served at IRCOM - Create joint programs and enrichment projects with other partner organizations
- Present to local schools and groups on issues related to newcomers and immigration
Program Operation
- Manage IRCOM’s After-School Program (ASP), based on its objectives
- Maintain a quality on-going After School Program throughout the year
- Develop and supervise special projects that respond to the dynamic needs of newcomer youth to keep them engaged in positive activities after school
- Develop relationships with individuals and families and serve as a positive role
model - Encourage educational development and literacy by planning and implementing reading, homework and tutoring programs for children and youth
- Implement and enforce rules and behavioural expectations, work through
situations of conflict calmly and with the goal of developing respect and mutual understanding & mediate between individuals & promote peaceful solutions to conflict - Develop and implement strategies to teach respect and non-violent behaviour
amongst participants - Apply for and renew gym permits and visit off site facilities on a regular basis
- Assist children, youth and families to adapt to a new environment and new cultural standards through sports, crafts, music, field trips, healthy living and other recreation and educational programs
Human Resource Management
- Assist in recruiting and training staff related to the After-School and Summer Programs
- Supervise program staff, including oversight of summer staff and program volunteers
- Work with program staff to plan, design and implement successful ASP activities that engage newcomer children and youth
- Work with IRCOM Volunteer and Communications Coordinator to organize volunteers
- Supervise practicum students
- Work with ASP staff to create consistent job descriptions
- Organize weekly ASP staff meetings
- Organize professional development and training as needed
Financial Management
- Assist with grant research and writing
- Work to further expand the ASP through increased funds, partnerships, public relations
Prepare the annual budget, in consultation with ED and Accountant - Manage day to day cash flow
- Monitor ASP claims and expenses
Administration and Reporting
- Write reports to funders relevant to the ASP and maintain communication with funders
- Keep accurate daily records of participants
- Compose program summary of activities for the IRCOM Annual Report and/or for public
information - Submit monthly narrative reports to ED
Other Tasks
- Help to organize special events and activities, such as IRCOM’s summer and winter carnivals
- Design and coordinate the evaluation of the ASP to ensure a consistent and reliable measurement of the impact of the program on participants
- Attend IRCOM staff and management meetings
- Participate in IRCOM’s Strategic Planning
- Work with other PC’s on joint projects and develop new programs for IRCOM based on
the Strategic Plan as needed - Assist ED with crisis management and complex issues related to children and youth
- Other tasks as assigned by Executive Director
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of three years experience in social, educational or recreational programming design and delivery within government, education, or the not-forprofit sector
- Post secondary degree or diploma in recreation programming, community development, or other related social science field
- Experience working with newcomer children and youth
- Must have valid CPR/First Aid
- Must have or be willing to obtain a Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certificate
- Valid Drivers Licence with access to a personal vehicle is a crucial asset
- Experience working in program development / administration
- Excellent cross-cultural skills
- Team management and supervisory skills
- Ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Strong organizational, computer, written and oral communication skills
- Must be open-minded, resourceful, highly motivated, creative and independent
- Strong commitment to supporting and empowering the newcomer community
- International education/experience is recognized
- Newcomer experience is an asset
- Knowledge of a second language is an asset
- Must undergo Criminal Record Check, as well as Child Abuse Registry Check
HOURS OF WORK:
This position is a full-time position for a maximum of 37.5 hours per week. The incumbent will
schedule her/his work around the program needs and will have to work some evenings and weekends. Flexibility is a requirement. Overtime work is compensated by time and a half off, and must be authorized by the Executive Director.
SALARY & TERM:
This is a 1 year, renewable contract position (37.5 hours per week). This position is currently
offered as permanent full-time at an annual salary of $32,565 per year, plus MERCS and extended health benefits after the probationary period. Renewal of this position is dependent on funding and performance. The position has a 6 month probationary period, during which time the employee or IRCOM may terminate the employment on one week’s notice. After the probation period, four weeks notice must be given by the employee prior to termination of this contract.
