One of Canada’s premier privately-operated, non-profit environmental and outdoor recreational
organizations is seeking a Farm Operations Coordinator to join our unique and dynamic FortWhyte Farms program. Since 2003, FortWhyte Farms has been working with marginalized youth, using the practice of sustainable urban agriculture to build confidence and leadership skills, provide employment training, and instil values of individual and community self‐reliance.



Job Summary

The Farm Operations Coordinator supervises the day‐to‐day agricultural operations (beekeeping, horticulture/greenhouse, livestock, orchard) of FortWhyte Farms. This individual also assists the Social Enterprise Program Manager and Program Coordinator with Farm programs, working directly with youth who attend FortWhyte Farms, acting as a role model and mentor.

This full-time, contract position is Monday through Friday including some evenings and weekends beginning end of February, 2011 and continuing until November 9.


The successful candidate will have:

  • post-secondary education or equivalent experience in a supervisory role in one or more of the following areas: horticulture, greenhouse management, sustainable livestock production, beekeeping
  • an enthusiastic, genuine appreciation of FortWhyte Alive’s mission and mandate
  • demonstrated experience leading varied client groups specifically marginalized youth
  • experience operating motorized farm equipment (tractors, gator, etc.)
  • proven initiative and problem solving skills
  • demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • outstanding customer service skills
  • exceptional organizational and communication skills
  • physically fit and capable of manual labour
  • valid Driver’s License (Class 4 preferred) and access to private transportation
  • satisfactory child abuse registry and criminal records check
