Background:

Winnipeg Food Share Co-op is a community service co-op. The Co-op provides healthy foods in communities where easy access to such food is a challenge. Food Share Co-op is responding to a need for healthy, accessible and affordable food for inner city families of low income. As well, the cooperative structure builds skills and capacity among local community members, and contributes to a sense of community in the neighbourhoods it serves.

The Good Food Box Program is a food access program that helps low-income families improve their ability to provide healthy fresh fruits and vegetables for their families. The Good Food Box Program currently operates in Winnipeg’s North End, and West Broadway communities. The North End distribution centre serves eleven North End neighbourhoods with eight drop off sites. The goal is to scale up the Good Food Box so that it serves all inner city Winnipeg and others interested.

Position Description:

The Good Food Box Coordinator will administer the expansion of the Good Food Box Program which will including organizing the distribution of Good Food Boxes to various agencies in and around urban Winnipeg, partnering with Community Renewal Corporations to facilitate and expand their existing Good Food Box programs. sourcing fresh, healthy affordable and when possible local food from distributors and farmers, recruitment, management, or assistance with volunteers at distribution sites, and the safe and efficient assembly and distribution of good food boxes.

Responsibilities:

1. Liaising with community renewal corporations

  • Consistent clear communication
  • Working with renewal corporations to plan pick up or delivery times
  • Adapting to varying neighbourhood preferences

2. Sourcing of Good Food Box contents

  • Finding and purchasing fresh, healthy, affordable and when possible local sources of food for boxes
  • Making partnerships with local producers and companies to ensure local economic benefits, a lower carbon footprint and more affordable food.
  • Offering common food staples as well as adding a degree of creativity to box contents in order to expand good food box buyers food knowledge
  • Assisting with capacity building handouts with every box that will teach box buyers new recipes and nutritional information

3. Assembling and distribution of good food boxes

  • Researching, testing and implementing efficient box assembly methods
  • Employing safe food handling techniques and teaching them to volunteers
  • Utilizing volunteers to aid in the planning and production of food boxes in order to build volunteer capacity
  • Managing an efficient and effective pickup and/or delivery system that conforms with community needs
  • Planning with involved community agencies to find reliable forms of transportation for food sourcing and box delivery

4. Recruitment and management of volunteers

  • Recruitment and supervision of volunteers
  • Teaching volunteers safe food handling techniques
  • Allowing volunteers to take part in the planning process in order to increase their skills base

5. Budgeting and money-management

  • Establish a process for collecting and managing funds
  • Ensure that funds collected from participating groups are reconciled and documented accurately

6. Reporting Monthly activity and financial report to membership

7. Sourcing of funds for Good Food Box expansion

  • Research funding sources, help to prepare, write and submit proposals to ensure sustainability of Good Food Box program

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in community development, volunteer management and working with people living in poverty
  • Business or social enterprise experience preferred
  • Experience teaching food handling skills preferred
  • Experience in project management and budgeting
  • Pro-active leader, positive attitude, enjoys taking initiative, works well independently and in a team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience working in food systems including logistics, stock rotation, shipping and/or warehouse work
  • Ability to lift 40-50 pounds
