About the Position:

Ka Ni Kanichihk Inc. “Those Who Lead” is a dynamic and innovative Aboriginal led social development organization that provides a range of innovative and culturally based opportunities to Winnipeg’s diverse Aboriginal community.

Ka Ni Kanichihk’s MYTEAM (Manitoba Youth Transitional Employment Assistance Mentorship) will provide a range of holistic and individualized support services focused on improving education, employment, and housing outcomes for youth 16 – 21 who are, or have been in the care of Child and Family Services. This “wrap around” service delivery approach will be specifically tailored to meet the individual needs and self directed interest/goals of each participant transitioning into independent living.

Ka Ni Kanichihk is seeking a mature and independent individual with demonstrated skills and experience in providing positive and consistent guidance, advocacy and coaching supports to youth.

Key Responsibility:

The Mentor is responsible for the delivery of the MYTEAM program objectives, maintaining program documentation, assisting in the implementation of individual case plans, the establishment of professional working relationships, the identification and utilization of community resources to assist in supporting youth including adult resources and the performance of routine tasks.

Qualifications:

  • A university degree, child & youth care worker certificate or other related combinations of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 1 year directly related experience working with at risk youth.
  • Knowledge of independent living practices.
  • Knowledge of issues facing youth who are transitioning from the child welfare system to independence.
  • Knowledge of the child welfare system and available community resources available to youth.
  • Strong organizational skills, computer proficiency, excellent communication, both written and oral, and professional work behaviors.
  • Must be respectful, sensitive, and responsive to gender, race, ethnicity, socio-economic status and sexual orientation as demonstrated in ability to communicate and interact with other staff and youth.
  • Must be able to exemplify the qualities of honesty, integrity, fairness, empathy, patience and trustworthiness when dealing with youth.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and to establish working relationships as a means of achieving goals and affecting change.
  • Ability to be flexible and to work within a team environment.
  • Ability to build strong, positive and effective relationships with youth and collaterals. 
  • Ability to work independently and under stress
  • Current Emergency First Aid Certificate
  • Current CPR certificate
  • A current Non-violent Crisis Intervention certificate is preferred.
  • Access to a vehicle for transportation during working hours is an asset.

Candidates are also required to have current Criminal Record, Child Abuse Registry and Prior Contact Checks. A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle are also essential.

Remuneration and benefits commensurate with education and experience.
