About the position:
The St. Matthew’s Maryland Community Ministry Summer Program Coordinator is responsible for assisting people in the West Central area of inner city Winnipeg to take action towards a better quality of life through building capacity. This will be done through using a community development approach in community gardens, family outings and events.
Anticipated start date is May 7th and end date is August 24th, 2012. Wage is $12.00/hour for 30 hours/ week.
The Coordinator will work with community residents, leaders, community ministry volunteers and various community agencies, and other community ministry staff to:
- Coordinate and support community gardeners to establish and maintain their gardens;
- Organize recreational family activities, outings and promote building community;
- Work collaboratively in a team setting with a Bachelor of Social Work student, community ministry staff and all volunteers (church and community) of the ministry;
- Co-ordinate scheduling, renting equipment, soil delivery, equipment/supply inventory, etc. for gardens and greenspace;
- Maintain accurate records including monthly and final reports to the Community Minister;
- Network/liaison with appropriate community groups to build community and coordinate family activities and outings;
- Promote the activities of the Community Ministry at events;
- Coordinate contact with community members to promote participation in community gardens and greenspaces and community events;
- Meet regularly with the Community Minister to plan, evaluate and review activities.
- Additional duties as required.
Qualification:
- Must be registered as a full time student in 2011 and returning to full time studies in Sept. 2012
- Knowledge and experience in Community Development
- Knowledge and experience in supervising volunteers
- Basic knowledge of gardening
- Ability to keep accurate records
- Ability to work evenings and weekends on occasion
- Must present a valid Police Records Check and Provincial Child Abuse Registry Check at time of interview or offer evidence that one is in process. Valid means completed within five months previous to May 7th, 2012.
Assets:
- Knowledge of the West Central area and inner city issues
- Experience with community gardening
- Valid driver’s licence and occasional access to a vehicle
