About the position:

A network of community organizations in the West Central community of Winnipeg is seeking a Neighbourhood Immigrant Settlement Worker (NISW); the position term is from May 22nd 2012- May 21st 2013 with a possible extension to 2015. The position is for 20 hours a week, with a rate of pay $ 17.00 an hour.

West Central is one of the most ethnically diverse communities in the city. The NISW project was developed in response to the high numbers of newcomers and the demand for services to help them adjust to life in Winnipeg.

The aim of the NISW project in West Central is to:

  • Build and/or strengthen connections between newcomers and the local community
  • Provide help to newcomers with day to day living

Responsibilities:

The Neighbourhood Immigrant Settlement Worker will:

  • Develop a strong understanding of and network with community resources
  • Assess the needs and wants of individual newcomers
  • Offer referral, support, information and accompaniment to newcomers as needed, to help them participate in relevant community events, committees, programs and training
  • Assist newcomers to develop connections with other newcomers by providing
    opportunities such as ‘Conversation Circles’ and workshops
  • Do required in collaboration with the NISW for reporting in written and verbal
  • Participate in networking with local community, other Neighborhood Immigrant Settlement Worker’s and the Steering Committee.

Qualifications:

  • Experience and/or education in community development or social services
  • Experience working with newcomers
  • Demonstrated communication skills across cultures
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of the breadth of newcomer experiences
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work independently and in consultation
  • Ability to take initiative, be flexible and work with a range of individual needs and
    demands
  • Strong computer and writing skills
  • Understanding of inner city communities
  • Familiarity with West Central community is an asset
  • First hand experience as a newcomer is an asset
  • Fluency in Swahili, Arabic, Amharic, Tigrinya or other languages is an asset.
  • Driver’s license is an asset.
