About the Position:
Two - 12 week term full-time (30 hours/week) Green Team positions
Daniel McIntyre / St. Matthews Community Association (DMSMCA)is a non-profit community renewal organisation. We work with residents and stakeholders towards social, cultural, economic and environmentally sustainable renewal and revitalization of the Daniel McIntyre / St. Matthews neighbourhoods.
Job Objectives and Responsibilities:
To manage the DMSMCA community gardens and community compost program at the Orioles Community Centre (approximately 30 plots), the Lipton Tot Lot (up to 10 plots) and the Central Mosque Community Garden (10 plots), in collaboration with the DMSMCA Community Greening and Environment Coordinator, the local garden committee and local residents.
Tasks will include:
- Community Gardens
- planning, developing and implementing a garden maintenance plan for the 2012 season;
- repairing and painting raised beds and compost bins;
- planting, growing, weeding and harvesting the gardens; and
- liaising with individual gardeners
- Composting
- Pick up compost from area restaurants and businesses in the compost coordinator’s absence;
- Help with turning and layering compost bins in community gardens.
- Working with Kids
- Coordinating the Kids’ Garden program, with kids from our neighbourhood
- Supervising seeding, planting, transplanting, weeding, watering, harvesting, etc.;
- Coordinating and working with kids to paint boxes and various murals for the garden.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
- Knowledge and experience in Community Development approaches and practices
- Knowledge of organic gardening and composting
- Ability to do physical labour all day
- Strong organisational skills
- Ability to work evenings and weekends
- Experience cycling and access to a bike
Assets:
- Knowledge of the Daniel McIntyre/St. Matthews, West Central area and inner city issues
- Experience with community gardening
- Knowledge of CED principles
- Ability to speak another language
- Experience working with kids
Other Information:
- Must be between the ages 16-29.

Wage: $11 / hour
Hours of Work: Up to 30 hours/week; some evening and weekend hours required. This is a 12 week term position.
