Developing, influencing and directing the economic development for the City of Edmonton

About the Position:

Economic Sustainability is a strategic priority for the City of Edmonton. The Senior Planner will be part of a new economic development unit within the Housing and Economic Sustainability Branch, Sustainable Development Department. The City is currently preparing The Way We Prosper, a comprehensive economic development strategy for the city. The strategy is one of the six "Ways" - the 10-year strategic goals identified in the City's strategic plan The Way Ahead that will help to set direction, guide decisions and align the priorities for transforming Edmonton's future. Community Economic Development is a priority initiative for City Council and will be a significant component of the implementation for The Way We Prosper. The Housing and Economic Sustainability Branch is responsible for advancing economic development strategies to support City Council's vision for a vibrant and inclusive city that attracts investment, ensuring ongoing sustainability and success.

Key Responsibilities:

As the Senior Planner, you will have an influential role in creating and supporting business diversity within communities, developing partnerships with, and between the communities, small medium enterprises and a wide range of community and business based associations. In addition, you will lead initiatives that require building effective working relationships and partners across a variety of City Departments. One of your first objectives will be to develop an implementation plan for Community Economic Development (CED) that meets the overall strategic objectives to support "The Way We Prosper". Your skills in communication, project management and relationship building, will make you a great addition to this team.

This is an exciting opportunity for you to provide the following:

  • Developing corporate policies, strategies and programs, including long-range business and strategic planning for CED, and establishing, tracking and achieving the performance indicators
  • Liaise with other economic development agencies in the region, other levels of government, and cross-departmental teams to ensure alignment of CED strategies
  • Supporting the growth and competitiveness of local businesses, by nurturing a City-wide culture of service excellence and pro-activity to the local and small business community
    Identifying opportunities for local community economic revitalization, business retention, expansion opportunities through issue identification
  • Facilitating, engaging and advocating for community groups to be pro-active in development of their economy, by reducing barriers through facilitating inter-agency initiatives that increase opportunities to entrepreneurship.

Qualifications:

  • University degree (Master's preferred) in Business Administration in Community Economic Development, Local Economic Development, Community development or related degree
  • Membership in the Canadian Community Economic Development Network is an asset
  • Minimum of six years of progressively responsible experience in economic development, community development, leading or growing local businesses, or small business entrepreneurship
  • Experienced in the application of Community Economic Development theories and practices
  • Knowledge of Edmonton and Alberta's economic, cultural, and political environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong marketing orientation and well developed skills in management, project management and business planning
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation communications skills
  • Demonstrated strong skills in coordinating stakeholder input and contributions from in-house staff and external consultants in multi-disciplinary and cross-departmental settings
  • Skilled in public process management, facilitation, and political acumen
  • Strong analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills with a collaborative approach

Terms of Employment:

Hours of Work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of a variable hours of work program

Salary Range: 91M, Salary Grade: PT3, $39.887 - $56.982 (Hourly); $76,829.54 - $109,757.59 (Annually)
