The Manitoba Association for Rights & Liberties (MARL) is looking for an Executive Director to lead the organization. As Executive Director, you will plan, develop and implement various strategic initiatives to meet MARL's goals. Responsibilities include community outreach, media contact, developing training material, preparing project and grant proposals, consultation with government and community agencies, funding and grant reporting, budget planning, bookkeeping and supervising staff and volunteers. Applicant must be a self-starter, possess strong leadership skills and have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The ideal applicant also possesses superior organizational abilities, strong verbal and written communication skills and is comfortable speaking publicly on a variety of issues. Applicants should have a combination of relevant education and experience in the social sciences, human rights or social justice fields. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to human rights and civil liberties and must have experience in fundraising, grant application and reporting processes and office management. Bilingualism is considered an asset.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The duties and responsibilities of the Executive Director of the Manitoba Association for Rights and Liabilities are:

A. POLICIES AND ISSUES

To work closely with the Executive to implement the directives, policies and objectives of MARL as articulated by the Board and committees.

In conjunction with the Executive, to develop and implement an annual plan of action including, but not limited to membership drives, fundraising activities and community events.

To co-ordinate MARL's relationships with organizations, institutions and coalitions whose objectives are seen by the Board to be consistent with MARL's policies and objectives.

To identify, research and bring issues of the day to the attention of the Board.

To act as spokesperson for MARL as appropriate after consultation with the Board.

B. PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION

To work with the Board, Committees and volunteers to develop, implement and promote programs which aim to advance civil liberties and human rights in the province.

To work with the Board, Committees and volunteers to develop, implement and promote workshops, programs, tools and other resources focused on educating youth about civil liberties and human rights.

To continue to develop, implement and promote existing programs which further the aims of MARL; this includes sourcing and applying for funding for programs and reporting on and maintain current program funding.

To provide the public with information and referral to appropriate agencies or remedies regarding human rights and civil liberties issues.

C. ADMINISTRATION

To perform or co-ordinate day-to-day administrative tasks including, but not limited to preparation and distribution of agendas and minutes for Executive and Board meetings; provisions of orientation material for the Board, committees and members; provision of administrative support to the President and committees; and recruitment and support of volunteers;

To participate with the Executive in the hiring, supervision and guidance of staff including project staff.

To co-ordinate projects undertaken by MARL and to maintain overall supervision of projects funded through MARL, including but not limited to financial control and fulfillment of reporting requirements.

D. FINANCIAL

To provide data as necessary to the Treasurer to facilitate the development of an annual budget and to manage MARL's funds within the parameters of that budget.

To assist the Treasurer with the preparation of quarterly financial reports for presentation to the Board, and annual financial reports for membership and funders.

To liaise with, and report as needed to funders, auditors and banking institutions.

To take overall responsibility for recruitment of members and maintenance of membership records and donations, and application for funding and grants.

To liaise with, and direct the bookkeeper in regards to budget, revenues, expenses, and program expense and revenue allocations. Salary range is $35,000 to $41,000 annually (contingent on funding) and is based on a 35 hour work week.
