Job Posting – Fair Trade Outreach Officer

MCIC’s mission as a coordinating structure is to promote public awareness of international issues, to foster member interaction, and to administer funds for international development.
Job Profile
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Fair Trade Outreach Officer will work closely with the Fair Trade Outreach Coordinator in implementing MCIC’s Fair Trade Manitoba program and will be responsible for organizing events, developing relationships and meeting with a variety of stakeholders in the community to promote fair trade.
This is a half time term position.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Event Organization and Management
- Organize and promote the One-Month Challenge throughout Manitoba, which involves online and public events
- Organize and promote Fair Trade Fortnights throughout Manitoba
Assisting with Procurement
- Contact and follow-up with Community Centres and schools regarding Fair Trade sports balls
- Encourage and support large scale purchases of Fair Trade goods for businesses, organizations and institutions
- Assist in the development and distribution of purchasing materials such as catalogues and web based order forms
Promotion
- Assist in branding and marketing of MCIC’s Fair Trade Manitoba program
- Assist with the creation of MCIC’s “Fair Comment” Newsletter
- Maintain and update MCIC’s Fair Trade consumer guide and website as needed
- Work with local community organizations and businesses in the development and
implementation of a public awareness campaign including the creation of Fair Trade zones
- Assist in the preparation of support materials for campaigns
- Assist in the creation of a best practices handbook for the creation of Fair Trade towns, communities, neighbourhoods and zones
Educational Outreach
- Offer educational workshops, presentations and displays on fair trade, and its environmental, economic and social impacts in communities around the world
- Assist in organizing workshops which promote green and ethical consumption and fair trade purchasing in communities in Manitoba
Accountability
The Fair Trade Outreach Officer is accountable for:
- Upholding the mission statement and values of MCIC
- Ensuring that events operate within the policies, procedures and budget established by MCIC and any outside funding agency
- Ensuring events are well managed and that follow-up and reporting is completed in an
appropriate and timely manner
- Developing a detailed timeline for the project
- Providing reports for the Executive Director, Board of Directors and Funders
- Representing MCIC and its project partners in a positive manner through professional
conduct
- Treating fellow employees with respect and dignity, understanding their jobs and their
importance to MCIC, and cooperating in achieving their goals.
- Functioning as a supportive team player and accepting direction and mentorship from the
public engagement team
- Bringing energy and commitment to the work
Qualifications
Education:
- Post-secondary studies related to international development, environmental studies,
marketing, communications, or human rights preferred
Experience
- At least 2 years experience presenting/facilitating workshops
- Experience with event planning
- Experience with public awareness campaigns
- Experience with marketing and/or advertising
- Experience with the non-profit sector and international development would be an asset
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Excellent organizational abilities and focused attention to detail
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills Knowledge of fair trade issues
- Strong knowledge of computer applications
- Interest in and knowledge of international development issues
- Cross-cultural sensitivity
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships both internally and externally
- Ability to work cooperatively with others
- Skilled at setting priorities, developing work schedules, monitoring progress and tracking
details, data, information and activities
- Ability to be flexible and creative in working with limited resources and multiple deadlines
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Proficiency in both Official languages would be considered an asset but is not a requirement
Working Conditions
- Office environment on site at MCIC
- May be required to work some evenings, weekends or overtime hours to accommodate
activities such as meetings (off site)
- Some travel within Manitoba may be required
Position: 17.5 hours/week term to June 21, 2013 (with possibility of extension)
Wages: commensurate with experience
