Community Bed Bug Prevention and Outreach Coordinator
18 month Contract, 32 Hours/ Week

DMSMCA is a non-profit community renewal organisation. We work with residents and stakeholders towards social, cultural, economic and environmentally sustainable renewal and revitalisation of the Daniel McIntyre / St. Matthews neighbourhoods.


DMSMCA is working in collaboration with the Spence Neighbourhood Association (SNA), West Broadway Community Organisation (WBCO), Resource Assistance for Youth (RaY) and New Journey Housing (NJH) to deliver a community level promotional and educational program to reduce the spread of bed bug infestations in the West Central and West Broadway Neighbourhoods.


Job Objectives and Responsibilities:
The Prevention and Outreach Coordinator will oversee the implementation of the West Central/West Broadway Bed Bug Community Education, Prevention and Support program. Working closely with landlords, tenants and caretakers within the rental sector and in particular within the hidden housing market sector as well as on an as-needed basis, coordinating efforts with Manitoba Green Retrofit - the Bug 'n' Scrub Program, the Coordinator will develop and deliver a community level promotional and educational program to reduce the spread of bed bug infestations in the community.


Job Responsibilities:
The Community Bed Bug Prevention and Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for the following activities:


 Promotion and Community Education:
 Promote the awareness of the Bug N Scrub program to landlords.
 Promote beg bug prevention strategies through various means (posters, adverts, leaflets, PSA’s, newsletters, bulky waste tape, etc).
 Develop and conduct workshops on bed bug prevention strategies (target audience: tenants, landlords, caretakers, and general public).

 Resident support:
 Conduct walk-through assessments of rental units and request Bug N Scrub services for units in need.
 Conduct one-on-one assessments with tenants, who do not qualify for the Bug N Scrub program, but have landlords who are unable or unwilling to provide bed bug prevention strategies.
 Provide access to a vacuum, steamer and laundry service.
 Advocate on behalf of tenants to receive beg bug treatment services.
 Follow-up and monitor those suites and tenants who receive Bug N Scrub service.

 Bulky Waste:
 Identify and tag bulky waste and used furniture in back lanes with Bed Bug Sticker tape.
 Work with the City of Winnipeg to improve the bulky waste collection/policy and provide further supports to the program.
 Develop and maintain a confidential database of apartment blocks, rooming houses, duplexes, triplexes, etc of those properties that receive bed bug prevention strategy support.

 

Qualification and Experience:
 A strong understanding of the impacts of bed bug infestations on people, especially those who are vulnerable. Having to deal with bed bugs on a personal level would be an asset.
 A degree in Social Work or the equivalent work experience working with people who are disadvantaged.
 Experience and/or training in developing and delivering workshops.
 Knowledge and experience in Community Development and Community Economic Development.
 Knowledge, understanding and appreciation of inner city communities with experience in rental advocacy and tenant/landlord challenges.
 Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact with staff and the general public, to deliver workshops and promote programs.
 Pro-active leader, positive attitude, enjoys taking initiative, works well independently as well as in a team environment.
 Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, while giving attention to detail.
 Good computer skills, including MS Office, Word Excel, Outlook and Power Point.
 Proven experience delivering results on time and on budget.

 Knowledge of the West Central and West Broadway neighbourhoods would be an asset.


Wage:
$18/ hour (plus 6% Vacation) Training, in support of the position, will also be provided.


Hours of Work:
Up to 32 hours/week; some evening and weekend hours required. This is an 18 month - term position. Continuation of the position depends on funding availability.


Start Date:
July 23, 2012 (anticipated start date).
