The Executive Director, Economic Development position plays a critical leadership role in achieving Council’s vision of transforming Edmonton to one of the world’s best mid sized cities as the City’s face and primary representative in driving partnerships and collaborative relationships with key Edmonton and Regional partners, including the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association, Port Alberta and TEC Edmonton, Meta Ventures Enterprise Initiative and Start-up Edmonton. Externally focused, this role is charged with driving change and economic development for the City with external partners and then delivering the change internally by leading a team of staff, building relationships cross-departmentally and executing a bold agenda with the Corporate Leadership Team and City Council.
Reporting to the Branch Manager of Housing and Economic Sustainability, the Executive Director, Economic Development is accountable to provide leadership and management of the following key deliverables:
- Develop and execute the priority Strategic Implementation Plan for The Way We Prosper, the City of Edmonton’s sixth strategic plan which focuses on achieving economic sustainability and prosperity for Edmonton for the next twenty years
- Lead Strategic positioning for Industrial Development and related support services programs
- Develop a comprehensive framework for Community Economic Development including priority initiatives and programs
- Provide leadership to ensuring effective City of Edmonton representation that supports regional collaboration in economic development
- Develop strong strategic linkages that will further investment and business opportunities in markets that include northern circumpolar, provincial, national and international target markets
- Provide Economic development leadership to overall City of Edmonton Marketing and branding
- Provide strategic support and work collaboratively with agencies and organizations that are addressing Labour and workforce management issues that will support economic growth and development

- University degree and/or Masters in Business Administration, Marketing, or Planning or equivalency
- Certification as a certified economic developer (Ec.D.) would be an asset
- Minimum of 10 years professional related experience in senior leadership and management with an emphasis on business development, strategic business planning, and economic development
- Extensive knowledge and demonstrated skills in the areas of economic development, project management, strategic business development and marketing
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working strategic relationships within a municipal setting and externally able to forge strong business partnerships with, community leaders, senior business executives and senior officials in all orders of government
- Exceptional business acumen and ability to manage multi party stakeholder interests while achieving strategic direction and outcomes
- Strong strategic business planning and evaluation skills
- Demonstrated ability to influence both external and internal stakeholders
- Innovative, creative thinker with a strong commitment to results
- Superior leadership and management skills including ability to delegate and empower staff while enhancing performance improvement, and team building
- Excellent negotiating, problem solving and conflict management, analytic, written and verbal communication skills
Hours of Work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of a variable hours of work program
Salary Range: 91M, Salary Grade: ML4; $103,393.49 - $147,707.19 (Annually)
